I want to replace my alt. with a higher output. They all have the one wire set-up, with internal v.regulator. Can someone tell me how to use this type. Do I simply disconnect the one wire from the alt to the v.r.?
The info I found was great. But, as the guy with the 79 Bronc noted, none of the diagrams show how to get juice to the fuse box. The main line to my alt. splits and goes into the harness BEFORE joining the s. relay.
Should I run a separate line from the alt+ for this, or what? There are also two smaller wire coming off the oem alt + harness and going into the same plug. You can see it in the photo. It is the plug with the '?' on it. The thick wire on it goes right to alt+, and goes into cab.
what year truck do you have??, All your power should come from the power side of the starter relay, should be wired with fusible links. On my 78 I got rid of everything but the green/red wire. I still have the old harness If I get a minute thursday I will take a look and see if it like yours.
OK I just went and looked, I do have the black/yellow wire run to the solenoid.

I did a GM 12SI 94 amp alt on my truck and all it took was a plug that connects to the back of the alt and a wire to the starter solenoid. The other wire on the plug grounds to the alt case, and I did have to build a spacer for the bracket since the GM alt isn't as "wide" as a ford one.
All this was on a 300 similar to the one in your sig
You hook the green/red that you have the arrow pointing at to the 3g alt green/red and hook the main 4 gauge power wire with a 175 mega fuse installed inline to the battery side of the solenoid.
If the 175 amp fuse available at the local auto parts store?
Yes the fuse is readily available (sometimes referred to simply as a MEGAfuse) it is the holder that can be tricky depending on who is manning the counter at the parts store.

EDIT: Once again Josh is faster.
That's how I roll... you're info included the Mega fuse.
I actually got my 175 amp fuse and holder from Ebay in the car stereo section, mainly because of looks. The stereo stuff has a little more flashy look to it. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow if the weather's okay.
Another thing that I had to do that I don't remember reading anywhere, which may have been because my truck had an Autozone alternator on it with a differently designed pulley. Anyway my V-belt pulley had a raised part in the middle around the hole and it wouldn't let the nut screw on the shaft with the washer behind the pulley as a spacer. I had to grind that part down so that the front of the V-belt pulley was flush like the serpentine pulley. Just a little extra information.
