Alright,Well to start I'm looking at this truck to buy for my first truck . But..Im getting nervous because of what I have been reading. To start the truck is a 1977 f250 highboy,With a fe 360 and dana 4spd. I want to get atleast 13mpg out of this baby, but from what i'm told all i'm get is 5?? I'm not sure if the truck is lifted or not the guy has it on 38s so i'm guessing it is? I love old trucks,But my dad can't see that...): So I need help so when I go to show him what I have found he will actually think about it instead of trying to get me to drive a car.YUCK! ha. Also any mod or idea you have i'd love to hear thanks!
hey let me tell you with 38s and a 4 speed the tires should help ur cruising mileage, i have the same truck engine and tranny and it has 33s on it and i bet it runs about 4 thousand rpms going 75(4:10 gears). As for a 6 you can look for the same truck but with the inline 6 300 cid. its a great engine as far as reliablility
Well,The truck im looking at has a great price on it,lol. So how much you think if would cost me if I just replaced the 360 with an 6 300 cid, what kind of parts would I need? Thanks for your help so far(:
If the truck is a good price, get it and then make sure it's tuned up pretty good and drive it. You may not hit the 9 or 10 mpg, but you'll end up spending quite a bit of money and only improve your MPG by 2 or 3 MPG if that. Yeah, you could go with smaller tires, higher gears, different engine, but the money you'll spend on those things just to squeeze a little more MPG, it's not worth it. I guess that's my 2 cents.
You sure it's a 360? 1976 should have been the last year for the FE's. I think '77 was the first year for the 351M/400, unless there were some early holdovers?
Just remember you are talking about a truck over 30 years old so if your really needing mpg then you might hold off getting this. I know they are cool and all but this is a truck and 4x4 with big tires. Good mpg will not be in the vocabulary when talking about these great rides.... LOL Good luck with it if you do buy and have FUN!
Yeah I understand that, Hey y'all I found a 66 with a inline 6,But I just want to make sure I'm correct on this that's still a high boy right,Or was there a certain time frame in 66 that they didn't make 66 f250 high boys?
