thank you for opening my thread. I know the cheap power adding to the IDI motor has been been discussed more than Chevy's break down, but this one will be a little different.
I have an early 94 7.3 IDI Turbo with 189K on it. I have custom air intake (thanks to Joe Fidy's Garage in Concord Ca), 2.25" downpipe, straight piped, and KandN filter. Im pushin maybe 200 hp at the fly?
I am planning VERY soon: Turned up Fuel Pump (with Pyro of course) , intercooler, BB injectors, and I want to tweak with my factory turbo. After these, maybe 220hp? Tops?
now my buddy has a 2003 F250 with the 6.0 PS. He has JUST exaust and a chip. He dyno'd 425 and 650 ft lbs!!!!!!!
This makes me f***ing sick.
So here's my question. What if I remove the WHOLE TOP END of my IDI (heads, intake, turbo, ect) and REPLACE that with the whole top end of a PS 7.3 (with ALL the electronics) ??
Why have I never seen or heard of this before!!???
well if you took the whole top end of pstroke and put it on your IDI, then it would cease to be an IDI and become a powerstroke lol
theirs been talk of putting pstroke heads on an idi to make it direct injection........i dont remember what it was, but something didnt quite mesh right or something.....
Dont worry, your IDI will still be clicking off the miles when that 6.0 is crushed and melted down into pop cans........
The reason you've never seen it done is because it can't be done. Other than both being 7.3l, NOTHING is the same. The powerstroke started as pretty much a clean slate, nothing taken from the IDI.
If you want a 'sports truck' buy something newer.... but then prepare to pay for it in decreased mileage, increased maintenance costs, and truck payments. Me, I can go a bit slower and save a whole lotta coin!!
If you went to a 3" exhaust you'd free up quite a bit of power. The Banks Power Pack actually made more power than the ATS turbo kit at sea level, and it was just a giant air filter and 3" exhaust system. Turbo or not, you're blowing through a straw still.

I agree with you 10000% Grey, and not to mention higher insurance costs as well. I just miss goin fast, thats all
and yes FordSix, you are correct. Banks Pack or ATS 3000 kit along with 3" to 4" exast would be HUGE upgrades in performance.
But dont tell anyone, but I see a 5.9 12V conversion in the near future

GenLightening, i JUST saw your engine conversion!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I looked at the new powerstroke at $60,000. I've got $2000 invested in my 86 so far, so I figure I can buy a turbo, big exhaust, and still have over $50,000 to buy fuel.
I paid $3800 for my 1989 F-350 7.3 .... my buddy paid $38,000+ for his F-350 6.0 USED! I remind him of that fact every time I hook onto something of his and move it! The covo usually starts with him asking how it feels to live life in the slow lane and ends with me sayin' it feels like $30,000 in my pocket! He hates talking about monthy ownership costs! LOL
