I think I may have found the problem. Someone really butched up the drivers side hub and all the seals. I noticed that the front axle never unlocked (freewheeled) when 4WD was disengaged. Does anyone have part numbers for all the seals? I think some were missing as well. There is a dust seal at the end of the axle tube and there seems to be another seal as the axle goes into the knuckle and a really big seal that is pressed onto the axle. I guess that seal holds air in the locking hub when 4WD switch is turned on. I noticed a piece of vacuum tubing going into the knuckle. Does anyone have any pics of the required parts? Also a friend of mine has that monster seal installer. By the way axle u-joint is fine. Thanks again for all of your input, you guys have been very helpful and patient with me.
Does the shaking only occur when you use the brakes?
I'm not entirely sure on a 2002, but on later diesels, they used what is called Hydroboost brakes. Instead of using vacuum to boost the brakes, it uses hydraulic pressure from the power steering system.
I can't honestly imaging what could be happening in the brake booster to cause this shaking problem in the power steering. But since the two are linked there might be something to it.
I would have to agree with chamberlain on this one..... Dodge's do this when the fluid is low, especially during braking due to hydro-assist brakes.
