hi everyone, i'm rebuilding a 65 f100, upgradeing from frame up. i'm useing 89 f150 lariet running gear with a 351w c6 auto. question is, steering colum from a 73 f100 auto work in my 65. any help is appreciated. going to post pics of build when i get smartenought to work the camera and computer
The main problem is going to be steering column angle where it attaches to the dash. If you swap to the later brake pedal support under the dash it requires the column to sit farther up in the dash. If you are not messing with that, then you will have to swap the column bracket from the old to the new.
Mark I disagree, The 73-79 column is a direct in the cab fit. I am not aware of the issues that you address. There is a difference in the cuff that bolts under the dash. The current cuff should be removed and re-applied to the donor. I am running a 76 auto donor column in my truck that was 3 spd prior. I did not swap the cuff so there is a space visible. Longer bolts hold it in place with no problems.
You will have to use the matching gear from the donor. If it is power steering the column is about 2 3/8" shorter than the current. By swapping in the ps it all fits.
If you swap the power steering/brakes with the pedal support from the newer years the column attachment angles are different then the 65/66. I ran into this when I did the neighbors 68 power steering/brakes and manual to automatic swap in his 66. That is what I was pointing out since he is changing the running gear over to the 89 with a 73 column.
As a disclaimer when I read "running gear" I see it as everything that moves the truck. Driveline/Drivetrain is the engine and tranmission only. So this may be where I have verred 90* on the tracks reading the post.
John, 1965/79 cannot be the same. 2WD's are different than 4WD's / 1965/66 F350's are different than 1965/66 F100/250 2WD's / With P/S, the steering shaft is shorter than with manual steering / Bendix P/S uses a different length steering shaft than with Ford P/S.
1973/77 F100/250 2WD's and F350's are essentially the same. 1978/79's are different and were also available with a Tilt Wheel.
With A/T: 1965/77, the NSS is column mounted / 1978/79, the NSS is mounted on the transmission.
Not only are there myriad different steering shafts lengths, but the shift tubes are different lengths as are the mast jackets and other fall-der-all.

Hey thanks Bill. Hmmmmmmm, I wonder if the 76 ps auto shift column currently residing in my 66 F100 2wd fits? It may not, I could be wheeling that thing around reaching speeds of 100 mph at times with a column that doesn't fit.

How can I check it out to find out?
It's as EZ as pie. Take the column apart, measure each part with a micrometer, take pictures of everything, then post the info here.
I guar-an-tee ... I'll ignore ... whatever you post!
Nope' not saying newer. If it is an apples to apples swap (66 manual steering/brakes to 67-79 manual steering/brakes) the column fits after swapping the attachment bracket. Now if you did the swap I did, which included the underdash brake pedal/booster support, the angles are different. I had to take out 1/2" off the dash bottom to have it fit within the underdash support correctly.
The swapping gods were smiling down upon you when you pulled yours I recon...
