Has anyone put a 66 onto a 1990 frame? The wheel base is 4in longer and the frame rails are a little wider. Other than that what other problems might I run into? I have an old 1990 f150 and would like to use it if possible. What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Blue, I have never done it, but one day back in that time frame I got down on the showroom floor and looked under a new pickup. I marveled at how similar it was to my 66.
It is not bolt up, but I think you can pull it off. I would keep the cab/front clip together and lift it on & off as needed until it is bolted down.
why wouldnt they allow it? something about the body and cab not meeting 1990 crash standards? would a person be better off retrofitting the more modern driveline and suspension to the old frame?
Considered doing same and understand there's a process where Ca. DMV will allow it but would have to be registered under the later model VIN. In Ca., as it currently stands, don't have to smog and as a result DMV does not have a clue what's under the hood. Having said that, the only reason would swap to later model would be to a 4X4 chassis; otherwise, intend going with brown79 suggestion
Frame Vehicle identification number rules on all vehicles registered in the united states that has a ladder or seperate frame from the body.
If you have issues and say get pulled over and they check the frame vin and it does not match the regestration you will be in a world of hurt. as the plates, title for the truck along with insurance is not for what you have been driving.
Your insurance company will check the VIN also in case of a wreck as they look for all kinds of reasons not to pay your claim. Could be real funny facing a 500k damage claim on a vehicle that is technically not insured. It is quite simple statement..............
"This is not the vehicle we insure based on the vehicles standard VIN".
Most DMV require a salvage title isssued for frame replacement and a new title issued to reflect the changes.
Good thought on the insurance thing. I was just going to use the 66 title for plates and registration. Looks like a dreaded trip to the DMV. Thanks for your thoughts.
