After watching Cory, Peter, and Adam work on helping Bob install his wicked wheel at RRE, I thought that I needed to research a top side creeper. I am doing the same mods as Bob was doing, but I am adding a set of up-pipes when Clay can get them.
Anyway, I didn't like the positions that everyone had to maintain while trying to get the turbo charger off and on (not your normal turbo uninstall, but that is posted in another thread).
I am calling this my "FarmBoy". It should prove to be as helpful as the real FarmBoy, but probably not as good at installing turbos. (Sorry, but Ziggy_Duck_Fan just didn't sound as good).
I used 4 8' 2x6" pressure treated boards and 4 8' 2x4 pressure treated boards. I am a little bit bigger than Cory and felt that I may need a little more support.
The top 2 boards are 6' in length. (I cut one of them 3 times and it was still too short). The 2x4's are also 6'. I used the 2' cut-offs for bracing. I cut a piece of plywood for the resting place.
That old lawn mower in the picture may be a source for wheels to help move it around. It isn't vey heavy, but awkward to move.
I was shooting for 52" of clearance to the bottom of the top 2x6, but it twisted somehow. I am going to loosen the bolts to see if I can straighten it a little bit. You can see it leaning a little (51 1/2" and 52 1/2").
Looks pretty good, should work just fine. A pad will go a long way to making it comfortable to use.

I've yet to use it and it's still in the box. It looks like a good unit because you're arms fully clear where you rest your chest w/o any side supports to get over.
I have the same one, also have the topside tool tray too. I scored them off of Craigslist a while back for $100 for both. Couldn't pass it up for that price. It is really nice for removing the turbo and any other topside stuff.

I was going to buy one of those but with the condition of my back I think being bent over like that I would be stuck there til somebody came along and got me off of it

, sorry Ray, my back gives me problems too so I sympathize but that comment cracked me up.. To the OP, nice construction and inovation. I'd build one but have no use for it now, no cash for mods now..
I think the home built one may be modded to fit my broke body better than the store bought one.I have given a lot of thought of eith building one or modding one to wher it would work
I also need a head rest as my neck is in worse shape than my back.I have had two surgeries and seven disc removed
My folding ladder has started looking like mod victim or something similar
I am going to Tractor Supply to find a yellow 'Deere pad so that it is a real FarmBoy.
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Anything but green and yellow!
That's a great idea. We have foam pads and a lot of towels that end up on the top side of the engine to lay on. Usually when I'm done I have bruises all over my torso from it. I've seen those top-side creepers before, just never pursued one. Let us know how it works!
