Smile Self made top side creeper

After watching Cory, Peter, and Adam work on helping Bob install his wicked wheel at RRE, I thought that I needed to research a top side creeper. I am doing the same mods as Bob was doing, but I am adding a set of up-pipes when Clay can get them.

Anyway, I didn't like the positions that everyone had to maintain while trying to get the turbo charger off and on (not your normal turbo uninstall, but that is posted in another thread).

I am calling this my "FarmBoy". It should prove to be as helpful as the real FarmBoy, but probably not as good at installing turbos. (Sorry, but Ziggy_Duck_Fan just didn't sound as good).

I used 4 8' 2x6" pressure treated boards and 4 8' 2x4 pressure treated boards. I am a little bit bigger than Cory and felt that I may need a little more support.

The top 2 boards are 6' in length. (I cut one of them 3 times and it was still too short). The 2x4's are also 6'. I used the 2' cut-offs for bracing. I cut a piece of plywood for the resting place.

That old lawn mower in the picture may be a source for wheels to help move it around. It isn't vey heavy, but awkward to move.

I was shooting for 52" of clearance to the bottom of the top 2x6, but it twisted somehow. I am going to loosen the bolts to see if I can straighten it a little bit. You can see it leaning a little (51 1/2" and 52 1/2").

Nice Bobby. That wouldve come in handy at RRE. Hopefully your installs will go a little more smoothly than mine.

Here are a couple of other views.

The crossmember in the middle is used to step up and also hang on. I will put a tummy cushion up there when I work on something.

Before I get hammered on the K&N tube, it has a 6637 on the end of it. I paid the stupid tax on the filter, but the tube and ram air box work with the 6637.

I need to get Clay to send me a RiffRaff sticker to cover up the K&N sympbol (it is embossed).

Hey Bobby

Richard here you parked next to me at RRE. Nice job i need to look into one, One little safty tip the corners at the end of the platform where you are resting look like elbow busters to me (JMO) I would cut them off at a angle and sand them smooth.

Thanks Richard. I was going to get a pad big enough to cover them. I didn't think about the corners. I bet that I would have thought real hard about them if I hit them.

Great design

Great design, i have been fooling with ideas like this for a while and not came up with anything like that!

The only other little mod you might want to make is trim those long bolts where you step up in, could see a twisted ankle you step back down onto one of them.(ok, so I spend entirely too much time with the safety department here at the mine!)

Looks good. How wide is it? Does it interfere with your arms while wrenching?

My stepdad bought this:

From: REL Stapleton Topsider Creeper, Model# 0-00019 | Creepers | Northern Tool + Equipment

I've yet to use it and it's still in the box. It looks like a good unit because you're arms fully clear where you rest your chest w/o any side supports to get over.

If you put wheels on that thing, make sure they are lockable (just in case).

Very simple, innovative design!

I may have to duplicate that someday.

BTW, that's a spectacularly clean truck!

I made mine 2' wide (ende up 23 & 7/8). I have about $50 in it. I didn't think up the design, I found it on the 'net. I did upgrade to 2x6's on the top and bottom.

I still have to trim the extra threads on the cap screws.

The wheels on the lawnmower are adjustable. My plan is to put them on where the up position is not touching the ground. I can lower the wheels (raise the platform) when I need to move it. When I get it where it needs to be, I can raise the wheels (lower the platform) so it doesnt' move.

I haven't used it yet, but my shoulders stick out past the end. Feels okay playing "air wrench" (okay, I just invented that term).

I am going to Tractor Supply to find a yellow 'Deere pad so that it is a real FarmBoy.
