aint that the truth. its gonna cost me 500 for the install. but it should be worth it.
really angry that the 4x4 module/computer is gonna cost 700, from ford motor company. cant find it on the internet. but they gotta be cheaper than that
Alot of people dont like the push button shift. I had it on my old Bronco and I thought it was OK. I prefur the manual shift, but wouldnt go through the effort to change it out. BUT!!! If it waas going to cost $700 to fix, I would swap it to a manual case in a new york minute. You can buy one from a junk yard for about a $100. (I just bought one for a spare) I have another spare that I would be willing to sell, but it has the older yoke flange. (88' and earlier)
Ill definitely look into the manual conversion. I'm still holding out hope i can snag a Transfer module from a local salvage yard.
A buddy told me he believed ebay would have one. Gonna check it out.
the truth is im looking to put around 2k-2500k in the bronco. Not much more.
But that caould change. im liking it alot
I haven't had to replace a module yet. It's most likely the shift actuator motor on the back side of the T-case. You can get a new one for $100 from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard.
How much work are you getting done for $500, just the rear gear install? Just curious...
The install is for the front and rear. (Motive Gear - 4.10's)
Its $200 for the rear, and $300 for the fronts.
My buddy and i are gonna do the body lift ourselves.
But it be $150 for that if the same mechanic did it.
Its definitely the computer.(in my opinion) Some times the 4x4 light comes on and will not go off for a couple days. So i disconnected the hubs. Didn't want the computer to accidentally engage. Even though it may not, didn't wanna take a chance. Gonna get a computer and re-attach hubs. Or just leave it as a 2wd and see how it handles with the body lift a 33in swampers. Maybe good enough.
Man, that's a killer deal for setting up gears. I hope they do a good job.
Did you perform the module test? There's a reset/test button on the module that you'll push & watch the flashes of the red light. It will tell you if it's bad or not. However, as I said before, I highly doubt the module is bad. I've replaced so many shift motors over the years it's not even funny! BTW, my '93 did the exact same thing... Yes, it was the shift motor on the t-case.
He a former jasper motor technique, he is an older gentleman, but i trust his work.
Ya ill do that check. I going on the info the guy i bout it from told me. He was a decent mechanic, he told me it was the computer. But he did also told me it be $200 max to fix, which is totally false!!!.
*** so if i touch to button on the module and it flashes "red" its not the module correct?"***
Wish i could get the 4x4 to work but i'm not wanting to spend a fortune. If it is the computer and i cant get one for under 300$$ im just gonna look into converting to manual. I mean IF i absolutly need the 4x4 in working condition. Need to get the gears/lift/tires on it and see how it performs on muddy/clay roads.
There's a procedure to go through. I don't have the details in front of me right now. You might try to google it! Ford 4wd module test. It only takes a few minutes. If you can't find anything, just let me know. I'll round it up & tell you what to do.
Do repair the 4x4, you'll love how capable these trucks are when off-roading, but i would check the wiring before jumping on the 4x4 module, also, get the codes, they might tell you something you might not know, check the fuses (i personally would check everything that is cheaper before going for the 700$ part).

If that i DO have to purchase a computer, Im seriously considering a manual conversion. They are just so much more reliable.
And 700 for a computer is super high.
BUT-
I found a computer online for 89.99 from ebay. But Im going to check all the stuff you guys have recommended. And go from there.
4x4 would help alot an manage to keep me from getting stuck.
had a ranger with 28in All Terrians , and it got stuck all the time.
So ive upgraded. cant wait to have this truck with the lift and gears. Shud be so much better.
Good thing you went with 4.11 gears. Going from 3.55 to 3.73 is so small of a change it's not worth it. Did you order a new front carrier for the Dana 44? You will need one when you cross the 3.92 barrier. (e.g. a gear change from 3.55 to 4.11).
