Need opinions

I'm new to this forum (6.0 diesel) so let me start by saying hi. I am about to buy a fifth wheel for my family and I need a truck to pull it. I know of an 05 F350 FX4 XLT CC LB dually that has 423,000 miles. This is a one owner truck that has been used as a hotshot truck around the southeast since it was new. It was parked in January of this year and has only been driven a couple of times a week just to keep the battery charged. This truck has had the head issues repaired and longer head bolts. It has had ERG issues and a couple of injectors replaced. All done by the local Ford dealership. Other than that, just routine maintenance. This will not be used as a daily driver. Only to pull an 8000 lb fifth wheel. I drove this truck yesterday and it drives great. Truck is clean inside and out. I can buy this truck for $11,500. Should I run for the hills or should I consider buying this truck? Thanks in advance guys and I look forward to your opinions, good or bad.

Just to throw this out there, I have done a little pricing on my '03, I think you could put in another 5 or 6,000 cash and get something with a quarter of those miles. While I don't doubt that one of these trucks is capable of a million miles, why not start a little closer to 100,000.

Let us know how you proceed, and you can come on here for some great start up advice, no matter how you go. The tech folders are great resources.

man thats a lot of miles for an 05. I would be worried about suspension issues, trans issues as well with that milage.
sadly if the truck is not all beat down it may be a fair starting price.

Obviously the miles is an issue but the truck is awesome. From everything I've checked, the truck doesn't look like it has that many miles. It is really clean and strong. Thanks for responses.

being thats its an 05 check the hours. its on the dash. thats a much better indacater then milage anyway. figure hours x 25 = the real milage. the lower the better.

So what you are eluding to is if you multiply engine hours X 25 and it's less than the odometer hours then that's a good thing. Just did mine: = 62500 (hrs X 25) while my odometer reading is 83000.

Well I am now the proud owner of a F350 with 424K miles. I also did the hours x 25 and it came out to 221,250. Wish me luck. Hopefully it still has a lot of life left in it. It is a super clean truck and runs great.

Congrats on the new truck. The only thing I would have added was that if you don't need a 4 X 4, then don't get it. Useless weight and maint.

If an '05 has over 400K on it it spent all of it's life on the highway (the way most hot shot trucks do) and using the number 25 is more for an average truck......not a highway truck.

As a point of reference my truck which never sees any city driving has an average of 42 MPH over it's life so far.

the use of the hour meter is for engine time only. I hate to say but the hot shot guys like to idle when its hot outside and when really cold.

Longer head bolts? Never heard of them (unless you are talking about the bolts being replaced by studs).
