I dropped my fuel tank to do the intank mod. Someone has already tried so now I don't have any accurate measurement on how far from the bottom of the tank to end my pickup tube. Any response would be appreciated. The quicker the better. I'm waiting on you guys to give me a shout back before I guess on how far away to end the pickup tube.

Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page

Looks like it is a little less than 15 inches. I don't know if they are all the same.

I'm thinking of putting a homemade umbrella on the bottom of the pickup tube. Will that help, hurt, or not make any difference?

Thanks a lot for the quick reply tdpower.

My tank is the 30 gallon variety and the pickup foot measured right at 13 and a half inches.

Robert6401 I wish I would have know sooner. I went ahead and set mine at 14 1/2. I did put the umbrella on. It's made of stainless steel so I don't think it will hurt anything.

If anyone can tell me that the 14 1/2 inches that my pickup tube is set at is going to be a problem, let me know and I will drop the tank again and reset it.

Put a straight edge across the opening of the tank, using a tape measure, measure from the straight edge to the bottom of the tank.
That is the depth you have to work with.

At 14 1/2 inches you are probably OK.
Two thoughts.
1) Did you blow through the 3/8 line to see how many gallons had to be in the tank to hear bubbles and is the low fuel light on? Pour fuel in the tank one gallon at a time and watch the dash for when the low fuel light goes off. THAT is your reserve fuel.
2) If not, now you need to drive the truck low on fuel (with a jug of extra in the bed) to be certain the low fuel light comes on and go X number of miles beyond that to get a feel for how far you can go before running out of fuel.

I placed mine between 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the bottom. I could hear bubbling while blowing through the 3/8 line with only one gallon of fuel in the tank.

Unless your pick up is so close to the bottom of the tank that it's restricting flow, I wouldn't worry about it. The closer to the bottom the better in terms of low fuel.

The lower it is will tend to pick up water in the tank quicker. But since we're not supposed to have water in there anyway, and we do have a drain to get rid of any water, I don't see this as being a negative.

To assure no restricting of flow, just use a grinder with a thin grinding wheel and place a few slots at the bottom of the tube about 1/8 inch in length.

Thanks to all who responded. I was at my shop with no internet calling my mom and having her type for me.

I set the pickup tubeat about a 1/2in. above the bottom of the tank. Put about 1 gallon in it to move it to the fuel. It had good pressure according to gauge and the low fuel light was on. I never let my tank get below a 1/4 anyhow. I was mainly concerned with it being to close to the bottom. By the way my tank measured 15in deep. Now I thought this would fix my problem with the air in the lines but I can still see tons of air bubbles flowing through my racor filter-water seperator. Where could these bubbles be coming from? I replaced the quick connects with new hose and worm clamps. I think all this air is the culprit of my trucks lack of power and inconsistant fuel pressure. AAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! I bought the truck probably 6 months ago and Ive been fighting these problems since. My wife says my next truck will be a new one. She gets a little jealous when I spend more time with the truck then her.. Sorry to ramble just venting.

1/2" from the bottom should be fine. Did you re-route the fuel return line? Only a small portion of the fuel pumped through the lines actually goes into the motor. The rest exits out the fuel pressure regulator and dumps back into the tank. If it dumps back in the tank too close to the pick up foot, then you'll end up with foam and air bubbles. Extend the return line out away from the pick up and you should be in better shape.

I ran it about 4in past the fuel float. In fact I was worried it might hit the back of the tank.I also had put the duckbil back on. Does that matter?

Why did you put the duckbill back in?

That's usually the source of the problem.
