truck died

Hey everybody, haven't been here in a while, but here goes,I was driving home tonight in my truck when all of a sudden it started to spit and sputter on me.I couldn't give it any more than half throttle or it would just die right out on me.I managed to make it home and then it finally died and i can't get it to restart.I haven't really had the chance to trouble shoot yet,but i did notice that when i turn the key on that the fuel pump should cycle through, well it does but it doesn't shut off.So i'm thinking maybe that it was flooding out or something then.So question is what would cause this to happen,is the computer taking a crap on me or possibly the fuel pressure regulator? Thanks guys. by the way it is a f 350 with a 351 windsor.

well I just did some reading up and it sounds like maybe the computer is taking a crap or did, because i did notice earlier that the abs light came on for no reason and the speedo was acting all weird jumping around and then the tach cut out.But i knew it wasn't the vss because the truck shifted fine.So I may have answered my own question but would still like some input.

well the computer might be acting up...
well i dont know if relays might cause this.

let me ask you this. do you wash your truck frequently?
it sounds weird but tell me.

my computer went out on me with hurricane dolly.
the computer seal was probably worn out and it let
water in. i replaced the computer and sealed the thing
with silicone. oh and my truck wouldnt be stable and it
acted up on me at random times

Have you tried starting the truck since it died with the engine cold? If so it might be the dizzy. They are notorious for the stator crapping out.

I just replaced my dizzy not too long ago. I had a serious miss. It was
a PITA to find out that was the culprit. Truck ended up with everything electronic and all the sensors being new.

Actually I had just washed the truck, and that's when the abs light came on,but the truck ran fine and i was on my way.Later on in the night i got gas and was headed home and that's when it started acting up.I tried a few minutes ago and it still won't start up and the fuel pump still runs and won't shut off.Pardon my ignorance but what is the "dizzy" is that just slang term for the distributor? and I don't see what that would have to do with the fuel pump not shutting off.Don't have any extra hands so i can't tell if it's getting any spark or not,but I was leaning more towards the computer being shot.

Yes sorry "dizzy" is slang for the distributor. If you want to try a different ECM then send me a PM with your mailing address and I'll mail you a PCM out of a '96 F-250 for 5.8 that I know is good. The question is how did you fry the one you have now. It would be a shame to put in a good PCM and fry that because you've got a shorted wire somewhere. Let me know on that PCM anyway.

You see how he said that he just finished washing it. Well the mechanic
said that water may enter and soak the computer and short it out.
I have a PCM too but it's for a 302... sorry

Well thanks guys I appreciate it,especially since the junkyard didn't turn up anything.I did find one out of a 1991 or earlier f250,but I don't know the interchangeability of these.

Ok well this dang thing has me stumped.I got a replacement ecm for the truck and it fired right up,I took it for a ride down the road and when i pulled in the driveway it died again. This time instead of the fuel pumps constantly running now they won't even kick on and needless to say the truck won't run.So I was reading up and I moved on to the tfi module, well whatever the spout or little grey diode is next to that is called i removed that and the truck will run barely but it will run.Is something shorting out or what is the deal with this thing? Also I think I remember reading that if you take a test light and power it to the eec iv self test spout 6 and the fuel pump kicks on that the ecm is bad??? Not sure here, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting, I have a '94 F150 with a 4.9 in it that has identical symptoms. I am convinced the ECM is bad. My fuel pumps stay running...and my ABS light is on...and there's NO check engine light. When I try to extract the codes at the diagnostic terminal, the test light STAYS on, no codes are flashed at all.

well I finally got the dang thing going.Turns out that the jet chip I had in there either took a **** or got fried when I washed the truck. Not really sure but when i got the replacement ecm I put in the chip and the truck wouldn't run,so I took it out and it ran fine.So I drove it down the road and barely made it in the driveway and it died again. So on a whim I got one out of a 91 F250 fired it right up and been driving it ever since. The only problem now is that the converter seems to lock up quicker than usual and the shifts aren't as firm as I like.So I gotta go pick up my new one that I fried thank god for warranty and try that one out and hopefully it shifts like I want it to.So I'm thinking the chip is going bye bye,not like it did much anyhow I basically got that for a firmer shift anyhow
