Ok here is my problem guys...I haven't had any serious problems in a long time but this one has left me begging for rides to work all week.
Driving the other night the truck chugged once...ok i got a little worried. When I came to a hill (skyway) barely made it over it was chugging bad. Made it to where I was going, got off the highway and never had a problem. The return trip it started chugging as soon as I got to 80. Tried keeping the speed down, was fine for a while then chug chug dead on the side of the road $130 later for a Canadian Tire Emergency Auto Club package later it's home.
2 days later, I try to drive to work. I changed the coil, and cap and rotor. Thought it was sparking occasionally now I have more spark then you can shake a stick at (alot of spark anyway), and it drove for 5 mins then chugged and wouldn't move more then 5' at a time.
I let my girlfriends dad drive it home after they drove me to work. He chugged and died the whole way back (remember I told you it took me 5 mins to get there? Took him 1 hour 15 mins to get home) the final "run" home was after he banged on the carb and removed the air filter (I had to not get upset about that...he was doing me a favour ugh)
Anyway, now its in my driveway and I am scared to take it out to test if him beating the carb helped heh because I dont want to get stranded.
He mentioned something about the choke being stuck...would that do it? He also said maybe I had some crap in my lines...hrm? The fuel filter is less then 3,000KM's old...never had this problem before and I've owned the truck the last 30,000KM's.
The only other "problem" it has atm is that its got a bit to much oil in it (leaks alot and I was in a habit of just "adding some" instead of checking in the cold...checked it recently and I was overestimating the leak...but its leaking out nicely
Now the thing that really gets me...is it runs like a brand new truck when its running. Then chugs and dies.
Clear fuel filter? Where do I get one of those? I only saw the regular silver kind at Canadian Tire...
and fuel filter can get shot that quick?
Ignigiton module...how do I test that? It runs 125% when its running and it starts right up (or does that not count for anything?)
pickup coil...isn't that the coil I replaced? Or is there another coil? The one I replaced was a long cylinder that attached to the distributor cap...and the spark makes it down all the way to the spark plugs (tested and sparking)
Thanks for the quick reply torque, I'm going to try and fix it 1nce and for all in the morning

Look around and ask a clerk. Down here in the states it is hard to get a metal one, they all seem to be made of plastic.
>and fuel filter can get shot that quick?
Yes, you may have taken on a load of bad fuel also.

Counts for nothing. You can get the modules tested at any good parts store for free down south...

I am talking about the ignition sensor inside the distributor. These can be tested also.
You need a repair manual for your truck, they are available at parts stores. They have great pictures
Might want to take the carb apart and clean it, or take it for a drive, and when it dies, get out and see if it has spark, you will need someone with out to turn the key, then just pull the coil wire going to the cap, see if it has consistant spark. If it does. Take off the fuel line and see if fuel is coming up, might be a hole in the line or a poor fuel pump. It should gush out and spray about 5 feet away. Then if you have fuel pressure, then try to get it home, replace the fuel filter and then take the carb apart and spray every little passage with carb cleaner or break cleaner.
I had the same problem. I also had less than 3000 miles on my fuel filter, so I changed the pick up coil in the distributor under the rotor, and it didn't help. Then I did the obvious and changed the fuel filter, and checked the fuel lines. I had one partially sucking shut. Replaced that and she runs like a champ. It is also a good idea to keep an extra fuel fiter in the glove box, just in case
Check any rubber hoses in the fuel line back to the tank. Sometimes they will get small cracks from age and suck air. They won't be bad enough to leak gas to the point if a drip but you may see stains at any bad parts.
