Left front Axle Assembly Question..

1988 F150 4x4 lariat 5.0 EFI 4:10's Dana 44's
stock, stock.

Ok, I'm driving this truck around to get the tools, and parts that I need to replace the Balljoints, and the left front Axle assembly, So I'm in a corner here, and need some help.

I went to the Junkyard to get an Axle assembly,(mine ripped out its ears on the yoke)- and they asked me if my truck had the 'bearing races in the Hub, or In the Rotor'..(I guess there's two different axles?)
I didnt want to rip it apart yet in case some old stuff breaks off, and then I'm walkin for parts.
I have the "Top Hat" type Hub switch housing, that comes off when you take off the tire,/ lugs so the rotor is pretty much flat faced around the stud/hub area.
Does anyone know if the 88 F150's had the bearing races in the Hub, or in the rotors? I hate to rip this apart just yet.

Your bearings are in your rotor which is actually the hub they are talking about. Some of the newer trucks have hubs(unit bearings) where the rotors slide over the studs and then the rotor is held on with the tightening of the wheel studs. An IFS Dana 44 should be simple to find and gather parts for. If they have no clue what you need or what they have I would find another yard to get your stuff.

He does not have a normal Dana 44 TTB axle. He has the flange hubs which are a completely different design and I would not make the assumption that they are the same or that the bearings are in the same place.

quisp, I would suggest find a complete Dana 44 axle with the correct gear ratio and just swap the whole thing over. It will take you most of a day but finding parts for your axle is a nightmare (as you've already noticed).

I probably would have taken this into consideration before running around for parts, and tools,
But at this point I'm just an Axle away from doing the job.
Its just as difficult tracking down anything else for this year, It took a month to track down my rear axel complete because of the 4:10's and the locker, and I eventually found one with 43K in the next state over.
So, Seeing that im this far, -gonna keep to the path.
- do appreciate the feedback though andym
thanx
