Auto lock hubs grinding?

I had a faint grinding/humming noise coming from the left front wheel on my 2004 F350 super duty 4x4. I needed to do the ball joints anyway, so I've taken apart the drivers side assembly. The needle bearing and axle race look good, not dry or scored, the main wheel bearing doesn't seem to have any play, and is smooth when turned by hand. The only source of noise seems to be inside the auto hub itself. If I hold the inside of the bearing (where the axle goes through) with one hand, and sping the auto lock hub with the other hand, it feels loose and clunky and and grindy. I guess the question is, how are these auto lock hubs supposed to feel? Nice and tight and smooth, or normally loose and clunky? Could this be the source of the noise? I haven't taken apart the passenger side yet to compare. I also didn't try to engage the 4x4 while driving to see if the noise went away, but the needle bearing seems to be in good shape anyway. Too late for that regardless.

The locking hub assembly may need cleaned and greased. You should do that every couple years to keep everything in there working.
