Time to change........

It's been a long happy ride but it's time to trade off the 2001 Super Crew.
So... no longer being employed at a dealer I need to rely on the knowledgable people on this site to advise me on what not to get on my new Super Crew.
I've read posts about vibrations, engines, transmissions etc.
Here's what I'm looking at in which ever year (2010 or 2011) truck I can find.
"must have options" : Super Crew, XLT, 4x4, white, 5.4 3V, auto, locking rear diff, 18" AT tires and trailer tow pkg.
"I don't care options" : sun roof, off road pkg. Lariat
Please feel free to comment on my selections as I'd love to have some "If I could do it over" thoughts before I visit the dealers in a week or so.
Thanks in advance for all and any replies.
E.

Just on a side note, I think the only way to get the electronic locking rear axle option is on either the FX4 (w/3.73) or Raptor (w/4.10) trim levels.

I'm sure this is a really dumb question, but what'sence between "electronic locking" and "limited slip".

Rather than type up an overly long post, I will refer you to another website which has decent explanations of many things....including:

How Differentials Work: Clutch-type Limited Slip Differential
How Differentials Work: Locking and Torsen

While that latter article does not specifically explain an electronic locking differential, the principal is the same.

I'm going for a 2011 in the spring. Hopefully the price and build site will be out for the '11 MY soon.

Thanks for the replies.
Some things I was looking to get a comment or two on on were:

The 5.4L. Back when I ordered my '01 the 4.6 was an underpowered fuel slob. All the techs at the dealer where I worked highly recommended the 5.4.
Is it still the better choice?

I see Ford added a 3V 4.6L, similar HP as my older 5.4L. Does anybody have some good or bad on it?

Also, that new 6 speed auto tranny, how has it been as far as reliability?

What rear axles are used with the 3.55L or 3.73L? Still the 9.75" ?

The front axle and transfer case, are the fluids still easily changed? no special tool required?

I don't know about anyone else but I really never liked any of the "packages" Ford puts together for the F150. I didn't like them in 2001 nor are they any better for 2010.
You can't get "this" without adding $$$$ for other things in the package. Like the power adjustable pedals, the '01 is at 150000 mi and I still haven't adjusted my pedals.
I realize for someone somewhere it's a godsend but why force others to buy that feature just to get heated mirrors?
Thanks
E.

Well I love hearing about pros and cons so I thought I'd get the ball rolling.
When it comes to "powered" (electrical) options, I try to go with bare minimum. Some features, to get my build, I had no choice in the matter (e.g. cruise control).
Reason? They break eventually. Like anything else. For some, big deal, get it replaced but for me, anything that goes wrong in the bush at minus 30 can hurt me.
Also, I really don't need many offered features (like heated seats, heated mirrors, electric windows) so why would I spend my very limited pay-cheque on them?

What I do need is;
- 5.4 engine
- 6 speed tranny
- max tow package
- 4x4
- crew cab (Scab)
- Box cap (high rise)
- roller-bed (8 foot box)
- grille guards
- nerf bars
- mud/stone flaps
- compass
- radio
- blankets (dog hair)
- class IV hitch
- good wax job
- rust protection (Pros, not Ford)
- bottle jack
and a 12 volt cooler in the bed

But that's just me....

Wish you the best on your new ride.

note- can live without a winch but will probably get one.

Anyone who's bent on a 5.4L or one of the 4.6 engines, get them now. 2010 is the last year for them in the F-150.

According to the MYFORD magazine that came in yesterday, our choices next year will be the 3.7L, 3.5L EB, 5.0L and the 6.2L.

4.6 3 valve

01 Super Crew--I went with 2010 because I wanted the 4.6 3 valve with the 6 speed. So far mpg good (18-19 mixed) but I only have 750 miles. 6 speed seems OK....short 1st gear as logic has it upshift fairly quickly. I've heard the new V6 will require premium and I'm not yet sold on a turbo V6 in a truck. I'd like to see how they hold up after a few years. The 5.0 should be nice but more power than I'll need and most likely a bit thirstier. Should be interesting to see how the 2011 lineup does.

Talking

On the 2010 models you can only get a locking differential on the FX4 and SVT Raptor models. But I've heard several times that for 2011, a 3:73 rear locking diff is available for all trim levels. I'd buy a 2010 model because of all the rebates and incentives right now. And there is still a good couple months to wait for the new 2011. Your choices sound good to me. I have a 2010 F-150 XLT Super Crew, 3:73 Limited Slip Differential, 4-wheel drive, and it has the 4.6L 3-v V8 engine. So far I haven't regreted signing those papers.
