Arm rests stock ?

I'm toying with putting arm rests in my truck; these must have been a option in 1950? Placement is key to avoid interference with seat movement; any pics of "stock" location ?

Don't think that armrests were an option in 48-50 trucks. Armrests came around in 51 in 5 Star Extra Cab (Deluxe) trucks. The doors have a reinforcement welded in the back with a nut and a bracket for the armrests to attach.

Take a look at the bracket. It's on the right side above the inspection access opening.

Sure,

I'm not sure about the cab options on the 1950s, but on the 51/52 "Extra Cab" models there were inside door "panels" and arm rests. (48/50 and 51/52 doors are interchangeable) and are very similar if not the same - Extra Cab seats had extra padding.

But, the "Extra Cab" doors were different on the inside as the had an extra "lip" running horizontally up a few inches from the handles and special "brackets" to screw the arm rests too. Here's a couple pics:

In the upper pic you can see the extra upper lip to hang the metal panel on and the arm rest bracket (like the paneling?)

I have a great picture of the arm rest location in relation to the seat but it is a BMP and won't download here. The arm rest sits forward of the seat back by about 2 inches. If you like I can measure the exact locations of my bracket holes and pass them to you. Or I can e-mail you the pics via regular e-mail if you send me your e-mail address in a PM.

Edit note: Ilya types faster!

Thanks all

May have to rethink this one ; not about to tinker with my doors that are in final paint. (May give some thought to putting re-inforced bracket behind door skin at location indicated by Julie.

Thanks again.

I used arm rests made by the aftermarket for a Jeep Wrangler. Only had to drill one hole...

Does the inside door metal bend when pressure is applied on the armrest?

The ones I ordered came black and uncovered. They also had a template to lay on the door to drill your holes.I did not think the template was accurate at first but found out by setting in the truck that it worked great. I sprayed them the color of my seats and covered them with the same material in the seat inserts. The mounting hardware seems adequate to hold them firm. I am well satisfied.

Dang it! I thought my 52 came with arm rest, but its not a 5 star. Just went and looked and the alignment is not the same on both doors and theres no bracket under the rest. I guess the PO rigged it.

I have a pair of complete Deluxe doors if you're interested.

Heres a little tidbit of information you might find interesting.

I did some looking around in my old documents and brochures and in my 1949 Accessories Pamphlet, I found that armrests were available as an option (and installed at the dealer) in Ford Trucks long before 1951. The ones shown fit in "1942-1948" trucks (without the additional brackets used on the 51/52s). I'm assuming that since it was an early 49 catalog, the Arm Rests fit in the 49/50s as well since the doors are identical. Note it shows the arm rest mounted on the door stiffener.

The additional bracket on the 51/52 "Extra Cab" door was was necessary as a support to hold the arm rest because on those trucks it wasn't mounted directly to the door - the 1/2 inch thick door panel was between it and the door.

Here's a picture of the Arm Rest from the 49 Accessories Catalog:

Every time I look through those catalogues or sales pamphlets looking for something I stumble across things we have been looking for and no body could find the answers on. The "Extra Cab" or "Dealer" Options, Fire extinguishers being a good examples. Most of that stuff is very deeply embedded in the info and usually no two documents show the same items.

Hard to find, and learn most of it by mistake!

You're welcome Tom!

Just a dash of caution though for any one else reading this. If you read the caption under the picture I posted it very subtly tell you that the arm rests can be used on either side. That means they have to be the same shape - front and back.

The OEM arm rests I have for my 51 (and 52) are not the same shape front and back, they are wider in the front and thus side specific! In other words 48-50 Arm rests are different than 51/52 and may not have the holes in the same places.

Here is the LMC catalog page that shows the different arm rests.

Just FYI
