when i start my truck up for the first time in the morning.. or after school gets out. i have NO oil pressure for like a min... and then it shoots up and the knocking noise goes away.. i have a feeling this isnt normal seeing how i just noticed it. any hints, clues, ideas??? thanks
In fact now that I think of it I convinced Ford_SIX to use the ford oil filters and he has no problems with his engine..everyone in my family that owns a for runs the ford filters from the escort to my old mans F150 with the good old 400 ...i worked for the state of CT . the state vendor is fleet guard filters . well one of the techs argued that the fleet guard oil filters (ford gasoline engines only
) are not good filter so he cut a fleet guard and a motorcraft in half to convince the people who buy the filters that the fords (6cyl and 8cly) need the correct oil filter in order to prevent engine damage..well now at that shop (not all dot shops run ford filter) all ford engines get ford filters . Ford filters were designed for fords so why not use them if they are avaible . The ford filter has the anti drainback where ford wants it ..that is what your problem is that Fram is draining back into the crankcase ..

actually its the napa special hahahaha i was in desperate need of a oil change so i just went to napa on my way home while i had a half an hour.. but ill try a motorcraft. thanks guys
NAPA gold filters are made by Wix, and are good quality filters. NAPA oil is made by valvoline, and is a lot cheaper for the same stuff. Make sure if you get it from NAPA you get the gold series filters, as they are better than the silver series. Motorcrafts are also a good choice.
knock,
How many miles does your engine have? Given that your oil gage works right, it's normal to have low oil pressure on a high mileage engine during startup. My '79 with 200K+ miles does the same thing. It usually runs like real crap for a few seconds until the lifters pump up with oil...then the lifter noise begins. The calamity subsides after a few minutes of letting her warm up. What usually gets me is when I stop at a feeway exit and watch the pressure drop while the engine idles. -not a comfortable feeling, at least I have my rebuild project coming along. It all depends on you and what you want from your truck, but there's a few that dare swap in new bearings and oil pumps to help breathe an extra breath of longevity into their motors. You may want to give it a thought...But, if it's not eating that much oil and it isn't smokin, I'd try easier things first. The filter and oil grade are good places to start.
yea i have 141 thousand on it. and it still runs like new... doesnt burn a drop of oil i just noticed that my gauge doesnt pick up for a min. or so and it has this knockin sound until the gauge registers
definatly not rod knock.. i remember that noise before i threw the rod in my last motor... id have to say its lifter rapping but i will look into the oil pump after i change the oil filter
