Well it appears my glow plug issues, which caused me to really wrank on my starter for the past month, has done the starter wrong...
got 120k on the truck and hoping that a good cleaning of the wire will kick the solenoid in.
for now though the top relay is kicking but the starter is not. It also has been slow, and gets faster when you crank it, which is indicative of starter wear.
Are the Advance Auto Duralast starters any good>? 218...
There is a NSA OEM Japanese aftermarket that claims 3.6 kw over the 2.5 kw of the OEM?
who made the OEM? my research says Mitsubishi made it for Ford, but I also see where there are some Nippondenso's in there?
How much is a motorcraft if there is such a thing?
I'm used to pulling a starter and taking it to the shop, but they say there are no starter shops around here...
I've been reading here for a bit now and have not seen anyone suggest a rebuild kit for the starter...I've wondered why...and your post may help shed light on this and help you at the same time...I've rebuilt many gasser starters and see no difference in our starters...someone should pipe up with experience....sorry for the quasi-hi-jack.
I have a really good starter/alternator rebuild shop near me, and the owner told me that the Powerstroke starters cost too much to repair so it is not worth there time and trouble.
I have bought Napa starters for my Powerstrokes when I have needed to replace one.
As for the quality of the other starters you mention, I do not know.
A few years back i bought a Japanese remanned from Advanced Auto Parts. It came with a lifetime warranty. It died about a month ago. I put on my extra and took the dead one back to warranty. I didn't have a receipt and they changed computer systems so my phone number didn't come up. The guy said it looked like ones they sold so he just gave me the new one and printed a receipt in case it died. I still have the extra one if that interests you. Still works just fine.
DB Electrical has good prices on Denso starters.
I've rebuilt mine before, but for $50 for the kit and another $50 for the solenoid, for $120 you can have a brand new starter. So I won't be rebuilding another one anytime soon.
The local shop wanted over $180 just to fix what was wrong with mine, not even to rebuild it.
DB has stock starters as well as the High Torque starter which spins over fast.
Only major porblem with the HT starter is you have to bend the main lug 90° and mine broke off when I did that. That and the darn starter is really heavy and it's akward to hold in place to get the wires on. The next one I bought was a stock replacement, I can switch them out in 5 mintues. The HT starter was $150 to my door, stock one was $125-ish I think.
