Hello all. I have a 82 f100 with a 4 on the floor that came out of (i think) a 84-5 f150. Its the Tremec RTS tranny.
My speedometer doesnt work at all. I replaced the speedo cable as the tip had broken off and I replaced the plastic gear that goes on the end of the cable.
when I hook that up to a drill the speedometer shows speed fine. When I stick it into the tranny it doesnt show anything while I am moving... I put the truck up on jacks and in gear to see if the inner gear is moving and it is spinning in there.
I felt the inner plastic gear and it seems to have a dip in the middle. Is it supposed to?
Does anyone know where I can source a part like that? Ford says the dealership closest to me with one left is in Canada as the part is obsolete. They wont even ship it in. I have to call that dealer...
any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
I know it's hard to see in there, but can you tell if the gear on the output shaft is lined up to the hole? I had a tranny once that did this, and I had to take it apart and press the gear on further so it would line up with the plastic one.
It seems to be lined up in there. I stuck my finger in and it contacted directly with the gear... I cant see much but it also looks like it is lined up.
I think the tailshaft housing can be removed while the trans is still mounted, but you will likely need to drop the rear crossmember.
While I'm not that familiar with this particular trans, most tailshaft housings can come off somewhat easily, but since the mount is usually hooked to it, the crossmember has to come out.
It will really depend on how the shifter is mounted. Older 3/4 speed transmissions didn't have anything but the mount and speedo cable hooked to the TS, I can't speak for this unit though......
The shifter is in the top of the tranny itself not in the tail housing and the only other thing stuck on it is the speedo cable so hopefully... It will be easy.
Thanks guys!
Here is a diag of the tranny so it doesnt look too hard after all.
