picked up my 94 f250 7.3 Turbo IDI today. Tach sensor is on order, dealer wi;ll replace this week. Whjile driving home, I noticed engine cutting out for a fraction of a second. Only happens when on level ground holding speed. Does not cut out while accelerating/
Here is the strange part. IF I engage the cruise, problem goes away.
cool.welcome to the classic Navistar International IDI.
the computer that runs the E40D (the overdrive auto in these trucks) needs a properly working tach.so don't worry to much until that's fixed.
If your tach is not working right, keep the driving to an absolute minimum.
Better yet, don't drive it at all if you have another means for tranportation.
No tach puts the transmission in limp mode.
That can kill a transmission in very short order, and they are expensive to repair.
Hmmm, I also have a E4OD and my tach isn't working, PO said it was a sensor, so this is a bad thing? Seemed to shift ok when I drove it... uh-oh...
when it goes into limp mode, it will shift VERY hard it seems like. If its still shifting ok, then its probly not in limp mode, but Id get that tach taken care of right away. Is your OD light flashing?
Update - The tach i not always inop. Rev engie a little and it reads normal. Also realized that cruise below 55 will also cut out. Still seems like Tach. If probem persists once tach sensor is replaced, will look a TP.
yeah, mine is shifting fine also, so probably not the sensor? I read in my alldata manual it may just be a fuse or maybe the tach itself... will move that up on the need to be fixed priority list however just to be safe.
Took the truck for a run today. The cutting out happens only between 35 an 45 MPH while holding steady. Does not cut out while acclerating through 45. TPS??
