Have a '93 Explorer w/4WD, except I haven't used the 4WD for awhile and now it doesn't work. The light on the dash button doesn't come on when pressed, but I think that switch is working because when I push it you can hear a clicking sound coming from some kind of relay located in the rear quarter panel next to the rear window washer reservoir. Any idea what that relay switch does, and what my larger problem might be? Thanks.
I work them on a bench and sometimes even after cleaning they draw 5A with no load. Transmission fluid works good on the bearings and that will drop the current down to less than 3/4 amp. Never get a used one, they will be just as bad.
I have a 91 and the low4WD haddent been used in awhile when I tried to lock it in I heard the same clicking and then the lights on the dash went out, at first I thought that it may be some relay switch too but it turns out that the button it self infact burned out and I had to replace it. When I did the high 4WDworked but then I tried low 4wd again and then the same clicking sound and then boom nothing. It turns out that the linkage for the automatic motor were guncked up and it was shorting out the motor and in turn burning out theswitch. I suggest changing the automatic motor on the transfer case and the try to lock it in if the lights dont come on then buy a new switch and that should solve your problem.
Thanks, but when this happened to me the first time I replased the whole button assembly and the 4wd worked again but when I tried the low 4wd it made the same clicking sound and the lights on the buttons went out and now nothing works again? So does this mean I need a new motor and a new button assembly or just need to rebuild the motor or what? I am truly cunfused, sorry and thanks again!
I have a 93 xplorer and the same thing happened to me. I took the transfer case motor off and cleaned it. There is a lot of dust inside. It worked ok after that. This happened about 4 years ago. I used that same link that diesel dummy used to get instructions on how to fix it.
Now occasionally the switch won't work and I have found that if I take a hammer and tap the motor, it knocks the dust off and the 4wd will engage.
