I bought a 75 F100 awhile back from a friend of mine with a 302 in it that he rebuilt 20,000 miles ago.
Its been bored 30 over. 5.0 Ford aluminum intake. Edelbrock 600 manual choke carb. Cam is not stock but he said he cant remember what it is, I guess its an rv cam, smooth idle.
I had set the timing at 10 and it ran real good and would melt the tires down, no pinging or anything. I bumped it up to 12 tonight and it sounded even better but I havent test drove it yet.
How far do you think I can turn it up and still see performance gains without having a problem with pining and detonation? Or is it just going to be completley trial and error?
Also wondering how far you can go on the timining with a completley stock 1973 302? I have it set at 10 and it runs great with no pinging.
Thanks.
Usually you can go up to 14 degrees BTDC, but that's on EFI engines, maybe it won't be the same on carbed ones, you could also gap your spark plug to .055.
Well I took it for a test drive today with the timing set at 12. Noticeable difference in performance from 10 to 12. I can roast the tires without brake torqing it and it has 3.25 gears in the rear. Still starts good and still no pinging. I may bump it up to 14 and see what happens.
Not sure if I am going to keep this engine for a spare or find a shortwheel base 2 wheel drive to put it in and build a dirt drag truck.
