Rear End Gear Question

Hey guys I have a Y2K EX V10, from what I have read the options for the gears are 4:10 or 4:30s is this correct and if so, how can I tell which I have?

I am guessing at best I have 4:10s because at 70 mph I am turning close to 2000 rpm...

You guys are awesome as always, thanks in advance for putting up with my ignorance!!

First the V10's came with 3:73's or 4:30's, the 4:10's only came with the V8's and it sounds like you have 3:73's .

I didn't know 3:73s were an option, that would explain my lack of the ability to hold 70 in OD!

Thanks!

I think 3:73's were standard and 4:30's optional.

= = =

I wish I could afford to get lower "final drive" gears. 3.73 with the approx. 70% additional "over-drive" ratio, works out to about a 2.6 over-all ratio - fine for the diesels which develop their torque at lower r.p.m., but a bit too "high" for us V-10 folks. ( that is, unless you run lightly loaded, at lower altitudes, on level roads, without much head-wind....! AND/OR cruise absurdly above the speed limit)

I would not worry if, under some conditions of head-wind, and/or loads and/or even the slightest grade, those of us with "spark ignition" motors have to lock out the OD .

Correct!

If you are turning 2000rpms at 70mph you have 3.73 gears.

Welcome to the Club btw!

Well that really sucks!

This weekend I towed my camper with my EX and worked feverishly to maintain 70 mph in OD, and failed miserably! I was **** about conserving fuel it was pathetic by my own admission!! However on the way home today, I dropped the hammer and let her eat! She did pretty good for the most part and to my surprise the fuel mileage wasn't affected that much. It was well worth keeping up with traffic and making a few passes for the extra fuel I burned!!

Is it a costly upgrade to go to the 4:30s? OEM or aftermarket? Is there a good source for aftermarket gears that y'all would suggest?

Given that you have 2wd, it's shouldn't cost you more than $500-700 depending on where you go. You will LOVE your V10 once you get those 4.30s...Just ask X_Hemi_Guy; he'll school you on towing with the V10...

I say if you are doing any towing and have the 3.73s and are going to pay to have them changed, you should go to at least 4.56:1 even with stock sized tires. (V10 only of course.) With what I tow, I really would like some 4.88:1 gears with my 285/75/16 tires.

Edit: price will probably be at least $750 per axle for reputable shop to do the swap.

Thank you all for your input!

Scott I am running 305s stock height for the time being... I plan on doing the upgrade myself!

Wow 4;88s that a steep gear! I know I dont have much fuel economy, I'm not going to ask for any hard numbers, but does it have a MAJOR or MINOR effect on the mileage??

Really, the only mileage number it will affect is your highway travel (without trailer).

I went from 3.55:1 to 4.56:1 in my Durango with the 5.9L V8 that really hates the revs and mileage stayed the same in town and actually went up while towing and I lost about 1-2 mpg on the highway.

The V10, imo, would do better than the V8 in the Durango as far as not losing so much with a little higher rev.

Oh, don't forget your smile meter will be pegged with the lower gears (higher number).

Just for fun, here's my Durango with the 4.56:1 gears:

That IS a little taller than stock. Stock is 265/75/16 which makes it ~31.6" diameter. 305/70/16 is ~32.8"
