ok, truck was stolen a year and half ago, when it was recovered the ac worked. well I let it sit for the past year and half just cause I didn't want to miss with it,missing lots of parts, plus I like riding my motorcycle. well it's monsoon season here in Arizona and I'm tried of getting wet on said motorcycle. so got truck going, new starter, battery, tires, oil change, plugs, emission tested, and tagged, but now the ac doesn't work. not sure if it's the compressor or just the clutch i've been reading about. when engine is running ac off no problem but if I turn ac on belt starts to smoke, telling me the clutch is in gauged but not turning. so i'm thinking it's that bearing froze up,does this sound about right or i'm i getting myself into trouble trying to think again
so i need a new compressor, now next question....don't have an extra $1200 laying around for a shop to do all the work,so my thinking is I get new compressor $250,install it then have shop vac and fill system does this seem logical or is there a better way? or is it just best to just have a shop do all the work?
If you don't have the right equipment to properly evacuate the system and then recharge it, you can mess up the new compressor. Your best bet if you do it your self is to have a shop evacuate the system, then you install the new compressor (you also should/it's wise to replace the orifice tube and receiver dryer as well). Then when recharging the system, the proper amount of oil has to be used or you'll burn up the new compressor. From my knowledge/history of having compressors replaced, you're better off paying a shop to do it, unless you have the right equipment and knowledge. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...
I just went through the whole replacement process with the local shop here...$900 later, the AC is ice cold on these 100+ degree days, and parts and labor are under warranty for 2 years. You might also check the HVAC section of this forum.
