cam.....computer compatible or not??

whats up guys..........i have a 94 f150 2wd 302/5.0L with maf and 3.90 gears. i wanted to do a cam up grade. looking for a street/strip cam r.p.m. range starting at 1000-1500 and ending at 5000-5200. since i have the factory maf do i have a wider cam selection. how do i know if i have hydraulic or roller motor or are there #'s on the block or v.i.n. do i have to stay with a computer compatible cam or it doesn't matter and it won't affect way the motor runs. how big of a cam can i use without affecting the computer. i have talked too other people and they told me that i have to make sure i have a cam that has the right firing order or i can have big problems. my firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. with this firing order is there a way to tell if this is a roller motor or not?? what is a good cam, comp cams, lunati, crane, howards, isky....etc. what are the factory cam specs and should i just stay with that just to be safe and not have problems. what are you hot rodders out there running to keep up with the pack.........any info is appreciated...........thanks..............p.s. will a double roller timing chain fit under the factory cover or will the block need to be machined.............thanks.............

i went to summit and used the side bar to pick what the cam was to be used for and for the yr, make, and motor and some of the listings didn't list rpm range and only had a listing for the cam specs only for street/strip computer compatible. so i didn't know what cam grinds had what rpms for the listings for cam grinds info only. i'm sure i could talk to summit and find out but knowing that there were about 10 listings for cam specs only i'm not sure if they would take the time to help me with what cam grinds would be in the rpm range i would be looking for. as for picking the computer compatible only it had only 1 listing and unlike street/strip it had multiple listings. so this is where i'm at for the moment.

Your 94 will be a roller motor , so you can run any roller cam you wan't since its MA , you have the same firing order as the 351 & 302 ho , the double roller chain will work fine , depending on what cam & what other things you do to the motor , you may wan't a custom tune.....Lew

Are you more interested in drag racing performance or all around streetability? You can make a step up to get a broader powerband by using something like the Comp cams 35-320-8, or you could take it a step further and sacrifice some low rpm grunt for better peak HP with the Ford E303. Whatever cam you choose you'll need headers and a high flow cat/Y-pipe to get the gains.. the stock parts are a cork.
Here's a quick simulation showing the differences between these cams, both aftermarket cams are modeled with headers because even in the software the cams don't make enough difference to be worth the effort without them.
I'll also add that once you have the cam and exhaust upgraded better heads will produce a large increase in output.

hi guys........thanks for the feed back and conanski thanks for the chart it was helpful and to lew52 the only thing i'm wanting to do is cam, heads, l-t headers. i am interested more in performance as this is my daily driver. i do have shorty headers, no cats and factory y-pipe with s-i, d-o 2 1/2 hooker aero chamber muffler. i have been looking for a bigger y-pipe, but have not found one. i have one 02 sensor that is screwed into this pipe that connects both the left and right side y-pipes together. i also have been thinking of up grading to long tube headers but didn't know where to locate the 02 sensor on the collector or on the reducer after the collector and with only 1 sensor would it affect the sensor reading with only the right side being monitored and not the left side. i do have gt 40 heads sitting around here. i just need to get a rebuild on them and find out what yr and auto they came from so i know what spark plugs to buy and if the headers will bolt on. the valve springs would need to up graded to handle the bigger cam as well as the rockers right. just thought about it right now...........thanks again for the feed back guys and conanski for the chart........have a nice day
