Alright guys, I'm in a tough situation here. I have a '78 F150 Supercab 4x4, with the 351, runs and drives but is going to need a lot of body and mechanical work. To build some credit, as well as fix it up, I was planning on taking out a loan soon. But I found a '78 F150 reg. cab longbed 4x4 with a '73 "police" 460, and it's in pretty good shape. Now I can't decide which one I want to go with. Mine is cool just because it is a Supercab, but I think I'd like driving the shorter one around everyday. Also, I'm thinking the 460 would tow better, however the longer Supercab would control a trailer better. So I'm wondering what you guys think?
Also, not that it matters a whole lot, but I'm wondering which would get the better mileage. Seems like the heavier one with the smaller engine might have to work harder to move itself compared to the lighter one with the bigger engine, so i'm thinking they might get close to the same mileage? Hopefully someone can straighten me out.
I,d buy the other, put the 460 in your supercab, fix up the cab and use any other better sheetmetal frome the other truck. The 351 would get better gas mileage in my opinion but between the 7-9 mpg of these trucks, what the heck go bigger. Good luck and post pics of the trucks.
I have both. the reg cab is the daily driver type rig (though I dont daily drive it) and beater because... well.. they are cheap and its kinda beat up anyway. its got a 351m that runs but will get a 460 when it dies (already have one waiting).
the supercab, though... they are rarer, way better looking, just... one sexy truck imo. My supercab will always be my baby. lol. at the rate I'm going on it, it won't be done for 2 years though.
in the meantime, its nice to have the reg cab (mine is a flatbed) to keep me interested in the trucks, and to haul parts around for the supercab... and to take pretty girls on rides up the ridges.
I won't lie though, sometimes its hard to work on the supercab when I end up using the reg cab so much more, and it steals a little bit of time and money away that I could be using on the supercab. it was a decision I made... rather have one thats running so I dont get bored and frustrated and give up completely.
