First coolant filter change

zhilton, thanks for the additional filter numbers, I am now using the NAPA 4070 for my second filter. As stated before this was my first filter change. I am using Ford Gold that is specified as the only approved coolant.

I agree there shouldn't be any goo, thats why I asked if others had it. I'll take some pictures but I'll need to email them to someone and have them post them for me. Anybody who can or is willing to help me out on that let me know.

Last December, a friend of mine and I had to replace his oil cooler and egr cooler so we tore into it. He had this repaired (the EGR cooler not the oil cooler) a year or so early by an independant shop right about the time that everyone was having issues, Ford evidently knew what was going on but the info was not common knowledge to the independant shops yet. So anyway we installed water filter after the rebuild, one week later, one week, the water filter was full and not flowing any coolant so we cut it open and it had sand in it and it also had alot of jelly like substance in it. After talking it to a lab man at Catarpiller, he said he thought it was from mixing coolants that are not compatable.
This maybe true with your filter also, if you bought the truck new it doesn't jive though. If some one added some coolant at some time and didn't use the correct coolant this could be the cause.

I am running a filter on my wifes X (installed two months before the work on my friends truck above) and after a 6000 mile trip it had about 4 table spoons of sand in it and the heat was not transfering to the bottom of filter so thats how i knew it was working!

Check out this link. This may be the answer to the sand and pudding like substance in your filter. Check out page 18 under the "Drop-out" section.

Thought I would just tag on my experience to this existing thread. I did my first coolant filter change today after 1500 miles. Never had diminished flow, just wanted to check it out. Totally clean, no sand or gooey stuff, nuttin' honey. Never used VC-9 or anything else other than 3 coolant flush and fills to date at 101k miles. I guessed things were probably good to go, but this confirms that. Still a little surprised that an '03 build did not show any sand. Good news, and my truck is running great now for going on 20,000 miles.
