yeah, well i might go ahead and take the cam out and see. It's the only thing in the motor that's not new. it's looked fine when it was out when i rebuilt it. it kinda makes sense, the one night after i had it running really good, the timing jumped back like 20 degrees so i adjusted it back to where it's supppose to be, it's pretty much the last thing to check as of right now. just sucks i have to tear it down again.

Could you elaborate a little more on that statement in bold above? Timing does not "jump" on it's own unless something bad happened such as the timing chain jumping a tooth or your distributor has a worn down drive gear or the distributor hold down bolt was loose. How did you check/"turn back" the timing?

i would be really surprised if the chain jumped a tooth, it's new and i just had the timing cover off not to long ago and it was fine. if it would have been a distributor gear the problem wouldn't have carried over to the new distributor. the funny thing is, the hold down bolt was the first thing i checked, but it was tight. i pulled the spout out and checked my timing, so I turned the distributor to 10 btc. that's it.

I'll stick with my original statement. Timing does not jump unless something bad happened. One other thought: the harmonic balancer ring may have slipped. Is it new too? Regardless if it is or not I would check if the pointer is at 0 (zero) degrees when the engine is at TDC.

Have you changed out you're tfi module? what about the hall effect sensors in the Distributor? They are known for getting loose and moving around...

Well I have been working on the truck and found a issue. the cam walked on me, broke the retaining ring and with the cam all the way in the lifters wasn't but a 1/4 of the lobes. the cam gear bolt was half way unthreaded. so i pulled the motor cut my losses and put another one in and it runs great.
