So I'm in Cody Wyoming. It's only 4000 since my last oil change but I'm making oil (see pics) and I'm at 20,000 so I take it to the local dealer and ask them to change oil and filter and fuel filters. I tell thm it's making oil which I have to explain to the service writer. I ask them to fill my sample bottle and tell them don't worry about the high oil level, I will take it up with my dealer when I get home but it would be nice if you could mention the high oil condition just to get it on the record. So, when they have the truck done I get it from a different guy, I pay and ask about my oil sample and he says it's in the truck. It was and as I look a the paper work I note that the tech has written "oil level checks normal. Now here is what the oil looked like on the dip stick about an hour before I took it to the dealer. Am I nuts or are they ? First pic is normal check, second is short stick procedure and third is results of short stick.
That looks overfull but it may be within some internal spec. I had a very good tech tell me that he has seen over 20 quarts come out of work trucks. So a quart here/there is not (in his words) too big of an issue. What he did say was that Ford was recommending changing based upon hours and not miles.
Not to take this off subject but what is the point of the short stick method?

they needed to give the customer an 'exact' spot to measure to.. (without shipping new parts to everyone) and with short stick its very easy.. set the edge on the tube, pull and read, if its at the full line, then there is a problem.
(above that is too full!)..

Gotcha. Is there a TSB or official Ford guidance on the short stick procedure?
There are two pet peeves on my truck. One is that the dipstick is very hard to read and two is that my manual tranny only has two cup holders. Oh, and the cup holders it does have seem to not fit anything correctly except for a soda can.
No, it doesn't look normal. Mine is at the top of the diamonds after a FULL stick. It was like that at 7500 miles and before the first oil change. I'm over 9000 now, and it's still there. It's halfway up on a "short stick"
