I am getting an Alpine head unit. Should I get a really good alpine head unit with built in eq or get a good one and then get an external equalizer?? Am I going to get a whole lot greater sound with an external eq?

Well first off I get my screen name because all I run are Alpine headunits in all my rides. With that being said Ive had it both ways. with the radio EQ and a seprate one and just the radio EQ. I personally belive that you can get a better sound with a seprate EQ because you have more control over everything. With just the radio EQ you cant always tune some of the frequence you could with a seprate EQ. But It can also be a pain to adjust everything thats why i finally took mine out, now its just sits in my basement.
ya, u can fine tune a system with an EQ but it isnt really worth the money for an average system and a PITH to set. like i said, keep the $$ and buy us a 6-pack =)
If you are only going to use a head unit with no
power amp, then an EQ may not be needed.
However, if you elect to use a power amp, I
highly suggest using an extrnal EQ, I have a
Alpine extrnal EQ with a Alpine power amp with
Kenwood speakers, and it sounds the balz.

They have a very good price range and other stuff

An external EQ can be a great help in adjusting peaks and drops in a system. However,i agree with Optikal. I would worry about the EQ last. A good amplifier and speaker combination along with a high quality CD player will make the sound FAR better than an "ok" system that your trying to tweak to death, making up for bad sound quality with an EQ. Buy th e best components you can first, then add an EQ later if you feel you would like some additional sound adjustments.
