I noticed that the ATZ's in the D rated are only 100# different than the E rated at 15psi less air pressure. The thing that I'm wondering is if I'd be better off with the D or E? My toy hauler is around 10K, but it has around an 1100# tongue weight! Which way would you go?
My boat is around 10,500lbs with the trailer and about an 800-1000 lb tongue weight. I've had no issues - and that is with things loaded in the back of the Ex as well. The ride at 65psi is much better than when I had E's at 80psi as well. The load rating is the main thing to look at so you're on the right track.
please note - just my humble opinion and experience
last year we were going on a 1000 mile round trip so I replaced my 94k mile original BFG's with a D rated tire from Discount that had higher load rating than my e's....
after 4 days of white knuckle driving (NOT towing even) I was at discount tire demanding a refund and replacement with some e's....
my opinion is that the sidewall was 'giving' too much and swaying side to side...
even WITH the hellwig rear sway bar
wanted the 285 bfg's but they were out of stock so got Mich 265's that are ok, but am underwhelmed by them ....
Wish I had gone back to the 285 bfg e's ....
but now that I have the rancho 9000's on,
I can run at the highest tire pressure possible and get a great ride and good mpg so the e's are fine !!!
(My overhead is VERY accurate and saw 23 mpg for a bit on our trip last week... only running less than 2000 rpm's @ about 60-65 for that time though! when we bumped up to 75 or more, it went down to 19.... and verified when filled up 32 gal & 637 miles !!! woohoo)

What kind of tire was it? We've had a few customers who wanted to save money and went with a specific price point tire vs. going with what they originally had or really wanted and were not happy with the results either. I can tell you I had Firestone Transforce A/T's in load range E on the truck when I originally bought it last year and they sucked. Bad in sand, steering wander was really bad and had road noise. Put the MT's on and the steering wander is basically gone, noise is what I expect from an aggressive tread and they are fantastic towing and in sand. The steering wander I get now I attribute to roads and the fact I still have an original steering damper on there - soon to be replaced!
Ben, my X came with Yokohama Geolanders in the 285 size, D's. Pulling my 24ft auto hauler with weight distribution and sway control, I couldn't really complain. Snow performance wasn't bad either. A little push at the front in some snow going a bit faster than I should have gone.
I'd like to go with 255/85 E's when these get more worn. I like the look of the taller tire, but I'd like to bite through the snow, and rain, with a narrower tire in addition to the smaller patch for a possible improvement in mileage.
Tires are a sensitive issue for me. My TT is 10K loaded. Having had both D and E rated tires, yes, capacity is important but so is the sidewall strength you get from 10 plys vs 8. When not towing, I just air down the tires 7 lbs. and the ride is great. BFG 285 65 16's, great in all conditions.
