Hello Guys.
I purchased an 88 Bronco II in Wisconsin on Saturday, and drove it all the way to Michigan with no problems, also got about 30 mpg, but today after filling it up. NO START, like something drained the battery, dome light dim, no voltage gauge and no lights came on when I was driving it, and the radio was working fine. I tried jump starting but would barely crank, so I tried the battery from my F150 which last I new was fine, but is not new. Had power, but minute I go to turn it over, nothing starts and lose battery power. I'm thinking maybe a bad starter, perhaps got hot during long drive from Wisconsin and shorting out. I put a new starter relay on today, and am taking the battery in to the shop to charge it up. I'm thinking about taking the starter off and having AutoZone Check it out
What do you fellas think?
look at the battery wires after atempt to start. If they are hot, it's very possible that you have a short in the starter. If you have a short in the starter there could be two reasons - coil damage or bushing wear (rotor hits stator and shorts the coils)
Ok,Heres what I did today.
I took the battery to worked and charged it up, didn't take much and it pasted a load test.
Bought a new pos. cable from battery to relay, because old one was kind of wore out.
Also bought new starter relay.
PROBLEM: No power to truck! No headlights or anything.
No start/no electrical.
1. I bypassed the starter relay and touched the pos. cables together and the starter cranks over.
2. I jumped the small post on the relay to the pos. post on the battery and the starter cranks over.
Maybe a bad fusible link? What do you guys think? Would a bad alernator create a no power situation?
I could really use your help.
Thanks,
Shiny
What about all the connections at the starter relay power input? The relay has two big power posts (input and output) and two small ones (+12 from the IGN cylinder and - from the chassis). It looks like there's something wrong there. ALL the electrical things in your car get +12V from that spot (power input post) - start cheking from there. Only after then go to the fusebox.
And the battery AND all the load should be connected to input, starter should be connected to output alone. If you do opposite (battery alone to input, starter and load to otput) - you'll get 100% the symptoms you describe: starter itself cranks, but does not react on IGN key, and absolutely no power in the truck. Also do not forget, that there's a switch on the clutch pedal that will block the starter from cranking if you're out of the cabin ) It was lots of fun for me - I did not know about this feature on US cars. Safety first )
Madclone, you were right. I thought I put the relay back on the correct way but I was wrong, thanks for the info. It started right up and everything works.
