Hey guys last night on my way home I got a bit throttle happy. Was goin about 30mph then buried it (full throttle) to about 75 didnt think anything of it but my check engine light came on. When I got home less than a minute later I shut the truck off, let it sit for a min and fired it back up and the light was off. So my question is should I be concerned? Would it have stored a code? Also a few weeks ago I was towin home from the dunes and my od light started flashing, went away when I shut it off. Would that have stored a code as well? Could it possibly have gotten too hot? Any help would be great.
Short background by truck is stock other than 4" tb exaust, and 6637. No guages yet so I dont know trany or egt temps.
That is normal specially if you are running any tunes. If no tunes you probably tripped it because of over boost.
If you would have kept driving normal the light would have eventaully went out.It was just a soft code if anything.
You are o.k.....
Well, you should have a code stored for both circumstances. I would definitely try to get it scanned. Don't waste your time at an autozone or something, you need to find someone with the right scanner to read codes on our trucks. Where are you located?
If your truck is an early 99 I wouldn't be surprised to see a 1211 code pop up. Our 15* HPOP can't quite keep up with the demand of wide open. You will have a code stored, so get it scanned just to be sure.
I agree that I don't think its possible to overboost a stock truck. It's possible that you threw a code because the HPOP couldn't keep up with the demanded fuel, but again less likely on a stock truck. Another reason why I think you need to have the truck scanned for codes - not to mention that your OD light flashed recently which should've ALSO stored a code. Maybe Dan (Kwikkordead) will chime in with a suggestion for where to get scanned. I believe he is near Seattle.
My truck is an 03. And I know that this is a dumb question but i've searched a bit and cannot seem to pinpoint exactly what the HPOP is. So what exactly is it? And where is it located? There is a resavor for it correct? Was readin a slow start thread and they said to check the HPOP level to see if its bleeding off oil pressure. I get the occasional slow start when its hot.
Sorry about all the questions, kinda turnin this into an FAQ, but I got a few kinks to work out of my baby.
High Pressure Oil Pump, it drives the fuel pressure and is located right in front of the fuel filter bowl under the plastic Powerstroke cover in the center of the engine.
If you take the plastic cover off you will be able to see better.
The HPOP reservoir is on top closest to the front above the waterpump. It has 5 or 6 small long bolts that hold it down. On top of it there is a small plug that can be removed using an allen wrench.
The Hpop is bolted directly to the back of the front engine cover low down in the valley under the fuel bowl. The Hpop reservoir is bolted to the top of the front cover.
I would bet you threw a code for low HPOP oil. Pump was not keeping up.
A 03 truck running stock will not throw a code unless there is something wrong, make sure your truck has not been programed or chipped, no big deal if it has,off the shelf programmer's will throw the light, DP tuner will also unless you get no codes. It's not really nothing to worry about, like said it's the HPOP not keeping up.
Thanks alot for all the help guys. Im gona go see if I can get it scanned to see what the stored codes say. Hopin I dont have tranny issues with the flashin od light. Not really prepared to rebuild it quite yet.
Don't mean to hijack, but I have a similar symptom and a corresponding question.
I get a CES light for "low injector pressure" when I tromp the throttle for more than about 6-8 seconds, and then it takes about 3-4 minutes of run time for the CES light to go back off, but the code is stored and I can see it when I run AE.
Any chance that rebuilding/replacing the IPR might fix the issue without having to change the pump altogether?

Like said before it it's calling for more oil pressure, very common on chipped or programed trucks. It's ok. Running a good oil or fresh oil won't show as bad. Off the shelf programer's are famous for this.
I would love to get a rebuilt/modified 17 degree HPOP, but can;t spend that kind of cash right now, especially since I just had to drop some coin on an alternator replacement/upgrade.
