I've searched and found nothing for location of the FACTORY trans temp sending unit location. I've found plenty of info regarding where to put an aftermarket sending unit, but nothing regarding the stocker.
Reason I ask is because my trans temp gauge in the stock cluster is at the middle of the sweep range even when the vehicle has been sitting overnight and it doesn't move as the truck is driven.
I'd love to troubleshoot the thing, but haven't found out where the stupid thing is located.
Truck is a 2002 F-250 with 7.3TD so it's got the 4R100.
I posted a question several days ago about a pillar guage cluster and what guages I should get. Here is a pic of the tranny that someone posted in my thread. I hope this helps.
I'm trying to sort out where the factory unit is located and, if it's internal, where the electrical connections can be found so I can troubleshoot to see if it's the stock sending unit or the gauge that's malfunctioning.
Adding an aftermarket gauge is one thing, but my OCD won't allow me to leave the stock gauge in a non-functioning state.
Your stock gauges work as a low/normal/high switch. Your gauge won’t move until the transmission reaches the “HIGH” level setting…and then it’s too late. Oil pressure gauge works the same way.
The sender is on the solenoid body in the trans pan.
I can save you all the troubleshooting - it's working as designed. The sender sends real temperature data to the PCM. The PCM uses this data as part of the input to control the transmission. It also sends this data to the instrument panel. The instrument panel is calibrated to keep the gauge right in the middle of normal any time the trans is between 50°F and 230°F. At 230°F the gauge moves to yellow, and I think it's at 250°F it moves to red.
If you want to fix this reprogram the instrument panel computer. That's where the problem lies.

So if it's working as designed what is there to fix?
I'm confused.
By "problem" are you referring to Ford's programming?

Glorified idiot lights - awesome.
Guess I'll end up building a new cluster from Auto-Meter gauges.
Thanks for the answers, guys. I thought something was up.
Mark’s answer is more exact and professional…but yes, glorified idiot light. I had a similar issue with my “stock” oil pressure gauge. I temporarily installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge until I have time/money to install a F650 dash upgrade and install a new electronic oil pressure and transmission temperature gauge. Then at a later date I will upgrade the water temperature and volt gauges.
