ok guys just wanted to share my work and ask some questions.
my freeze plug (core plug) on the pass side closest to the firewall started to leak. I replaced it with one of the rubber ones. It was a fairly easy job. In my driveway oin my back with basic tools. The question I have was that there was so much grim, really bad grime that came out. It was like a dirty oily lumpy crud. What was it? Just 42 years of miss use? I have had the top half of the engine apart and I am always amazed at how clean it is (on the inside). Do I need to tear it aprt quick????? thanks
I always do all of the freeze plugs at once. If one is leaking several are about to. You can remove the thermostat and stick a garden hose in the intake and while the water is flushing, break up the scale and rust with a bendable thin rod through the freeze plug holes and allow it to be flushed out. I don't recommend rubber or steel freeze plugs as they are just a temporary repair. Brass is the way to go. Your local parts house will try to sell you 1-3/4" freeze plugs, the actual size needed is 1-49/64". Sand or clean up the freeze plug bores with emory cloth or scotch brite and apply a thin bead of Permatex Aviation sealer to the sealing surface of the freeze plug prior to installation.
Bobby - thanks. I agree that the rubber one I put on is just temp. I think I will do them all with brass this winter. I think that will be a good time to pull the motor out. How many total do I have 3 per side or 4 per side. I dont think I could do them all with the engine in, well I guess I could just have to be creative.
Hey Bobby, that measurement is good to know. I've got a truck that always looses one of the plugs every year, and I just keep putting one in it from the local parts house. I'll have to try and find one a little bigger. Any idea of a good place to buy them?
