CEL won't go off

How do I get my CEL to go away? I was pullling a code for the egr valve and cleared it using O'Reilly's scan tool. Then I went home pulled the egr valve and cleaned it up until it looked like new. Now my light is back on. What's the deal?

Sounds like cleaning the EGR valve did not solve your issue. It's probably only 50% or less that it would, so no real surprise there. Do you know what code you previously cleared? Why not go back and have it read again?

You can clear them by disconnecting your batteries, turning the headlights on, and waiting 20 minutes. But if the issue is still present it will just set again. If the issue is resolved, the CEL will reset itself after a few run/start cycles.

p0405 = Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor "A" Circuit Low

I'm no expert, but I think that would be a sensor inside the EGR valve to sense travel. Which would mean a bad valve.

Italian tuneup = drive it like you stole it

I've heard the valves are about $300, but don't quote me.

just curious, if the egr valve is bad why would the light be on sometimes and off sometimes? example: the light has been on all day today and now it just went off. the light never goes off/on while the truck is running. the light is either on at startup or off at startup. seems a little odd to me.

With a 2005, the cel takes a few drive cycles to come on. Not sure if that explains it or not, but maybe it could.

I corrected your post for the complete description of the P0405 code. You already had the diagnosis correct, unless it's a bad wire.

And add to that the fact that the EGR doesn't open until the engine is warmed up, and it all makes for very unpredictable conditions.

Don't know what else to tell you, except that the dealer can hook up to your truck and command the EGR valve while monitoring the response. This seems like a good plan of attack rather than just buying a valve because some dork on the internet (me) told you to.

How many drive cycles are we talking here? I am in and out of my truck all day and start it and stop a dozen times or more each day.

After I disconnected the EGR valve on my 2005, it was around 3 IIRC. But I am w/ Bill - I also believe it can depend on how long you drive it, or how warmed up you have it.
