I have a 65 F100 with what I believe to be a 240. It sounds like it has noisy lifters. While I haven't had any trouble yet out of it I hate the sound of all that clicking and clacking. The guy I bought it from claimed it had solid lifters from the factory (he also claimed it was a 300 six which near as I can tell it isn't). Did sixes come with solid lifters back then? I really want to throw in a new set to quiet the motor down.
'65 was the first year Ford put out the 300. I am not certain, but I doubt they ever put solid lifters in the 300. Try to order a set of lifters from a parts house and see what they have.
I would bet the previous owner was selling you a crock. I'll bet the hyd. lifters are full of sludge and clogged up, therefore siezed up and clattering, or your valves are out of adjustment. It could be any number of things in your v. train making that sound. You just have to open it up and check things out.
I checked on Summit Racing, and they are all hyd. They cost $3-5 each.
240 and 300 engines are externaly identical. Unless the air cleaner decal is still there.
I have never heard of a factory mechanical lifter in a big six. I know you can buy them for performance use though.
A can of seafoam and some diesel may free them up a bit. Though if they are clattering baddly the lifter bores and everything else is probobly hashed pretty bad.
What side is your intake and exhaust on? If it is on the drivers side you have a 64 with a 223 or 262 inline.
It definitely is either a 240 or a 300. The exhaust and intake are on the passenger side. When I ran the vin number it said it came with a 240. The truck is pretty basic being an ex-military truck. Curiously though it came with power steering. I think I am going to try the sea foam route and see what happens.
I thought the 300 was basically just a stroked 240. Being that it was an ex-military vehicle, there's always the possibility that the engine isn't original. Back then, things weren't as disposable as they are looked at these days and they may have put in a 300 to replace the original 240.
