chaffing radiator hose

I was crawling around under my truck and noticed the lower radiator hose has been rubbing against the power steering box. It has a decent size valley rubbed into it. I'll be replacing that and coming up with something to wrap and tie the new one up and away from it. You all might want to check yours out. This will leave you sitting on the side of the road !!

The lower radiator hose was actually modified and/or replaced on some trucks for that very reason way back in 04 IIRC. The new hose comes with a mesh sleeve for that very reason. One thing I will suggest is that you find a spring to go into the lower hose to keep it from sucking closed since they don't come with one anymore.

My truck is a 2005 cc drw. Where can I get an inner spring? Do they run the entire length of the hose. I do remember my 1966 F100 used to have the spring loaded in the hose. Thanks again guys I fell like I've been living in a cave. All my other Fords never needed so much babying.

The replacement lower rad hose comes with plastic convolute wrapped around that particular section to prevent a repeat issue of what you described. Also make sure to use the supplied push pin style backet that secures it to the fan shroud.

Thanks M-CHAN68. Is this a dealer specific item? How much do they cost?

I don't remember off the top of my head, but I don't think it was an unreasonable price either. Yes, it is a dealer specific item.

The springs are NOT readily available and not easily installed. It's one of those things that was "told" to me long ago that I've never seen addressed here and I'm not sure that it's even needed.

If your forced to buy an a/m hose, just cut a section out of the old hose, split it and ty-rap it to the new hose were the rub point is.

I got another look at my hose and it is the updated one. The extra wrap on the hose has slipped down to the bottom and it has the push pin bracket but it still vibrates against the steering box. Split and tie wrap old piece to the new hose is a great insurance policy thanks 69CJ.

Yes, but it was a real bitch getting that spring in. FWIW--this was told to me by an Army chief of maintenance who told me that the govt had actually done extensive studies on 6.0 overheating and that the bottom radiator hose was prone to sucking shut. I inquired at the IH dealership in Fayettenam, NC and they told me that their truck's had springs in the lower radiator hoses for that very reason. I've never had an issue with it, but OLD SCHOOL was always that way, and putting in the spring was basically free. I did use a spring that was really tight so that it wouldn't slide into the water pump (if that's even possible).

Well I'll see if I can dig a spring up. Gonna do a complete flush while I'm at it and nail down that transmission leak. Thank you again.
