So I mounted and wired up an old CB in my 76 F150 last night, got a magnetic mount antenna and tested it out last night. With the key just in ACC posistion it "works" ok, but I am getting a lot of 'noise' in the line. With the truck running, yeah, total loss of anything. Just static from the engine I can imagine?
So, the question is, where is the best place to tap into for power to a CB so I don't get any noise? My buddy recommended an inline filter for the power line? Oh yeah, I ended up just stuffin the power into the ACCY spot in the fuse box... ::hides:: Yes, I know, this is NOT the best place to get power from, but could someone help me out? I am hoping that it's just an issue of where I am getting my power from and not that the CB is just way old.
i could probably plug it in w/ the radio cable...if i had a radio haha - PO ripped it out lol - and forgive me for my ignorance, but what is a choke on the back of the alternator...thanks for your help!!!!
That's odd. I get no static or noise whatsoever, however I ran an aux 4 circuit "live" fuse box next to the original and tapped power there. The aux fuse gets power directly from the hot side of the starter solenoid and is fused there as well. You might also check the wires ran for the antenna.
Well I got a noise filter that a ran inline at the battery and it filters the AC from the line and it helped a lot but I still get a lot of alternator whine. Maybe the only fix is a new alternator? Or could it just be that my CB is about as old as the truck? Would a new CB solve my problem perhaps?
First I would be sure that everything had a good solid ground and power connections, the right length coax and swr's set, then go from there. A newer radio may have noise limiters and such but may not be any better than your old one , hard to say without knowing what you have. Better yet, if you can buy a new radio, just go to a good cb shop and have them check everything out for you. its probably cheaper than a new radio and work better also..
Well, my radio is grounded and powered directly to the noise filter which goes direct to the positive and negative terminals on the battery. I'm actually a police officer out here and a guy at the state radio shop is going to have me come in this week and tune my antenna and take a look at how I have it set up. Hopefully he can get it all workin good for me. Thanks for the tips guys!
