I've seen and heard of those gears going much further than that. What makes you think they need to be changed, or is this just for maintenance? Ah, just thought of something, the later ones had phenolic gears, that may be something you want to look at, they might wear or chip a tooth?
just a maintenance thing id rather replace them than have them go out and cause other damage also on my list is motor mounts, shocks, and side cover gasket as far as hard parts being replaced head liner needs recovered too but no biggie there
Those things are tougher than you'd think. They also SUCK to get off the cam, especially in the engine. I'd leave it alone unless absolutely needed. When going through my engine a few weeks ago, I had a nightmare with this gear. I bought a new Crane cam and got the steel Comp Cams timing set so I didn't need it, but DID need the thrust plate and key and believe I'll just order both new next time!
I take it you mean fuel injected? Or are you expressing your dislike of injection?
I believe that the only project that required more work was pulling the engine. Radiator, alternator, p. steering pump, fan, v. cover (with the EFI system, does that require removal of the part of the system?)timing cover, lifters, p. rods (kept in order)distributor, and v. dampener all come off, or can be hung from wires and held out of the way. You need to take off parts of your grill, trans cooler too.
Bottom line: If it ain't broke, drive it like it's stolen.
