chugging at ilde

the truck i have is a 1994 f150 w/ the trusty inline 6 backed with a 5 speed manual. the problem is, on a cold start, the truck idles rough like it has a big cam in it for about 15-20 seconds then in evens out and idles fine. after the first start, it will start just fine every other time after until it is cold again. the only other thing it does is when im drivin, if i put the gas to the floor, it seems as if its running lean with fuel but it doesnt bog out. anything before 3/4 throttle, it runs and drives just fine. im thinkin mabe the egr valve? ALSO, i noticed that there is a tube coming from the exhaust manifold to what looks like a front egr valve and there is the same thing on the back of the motor but the tube is connected to nothing and is just sitting there dangling. ANY input would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<!-- / message -->

hi mate

Mine does the same thing an mine is a 1974 f250 with Canadian 300ci She starts first go a few pumps on the gas before I kick her over an she starts every time. She runs a little rough time to warm up an them she's fine also has cutting fuel when you push the gas but picks up straight away going round corners also has a fart and splutter I think it's the fuel it self unleaded ****. Cant be much more then that old engine new fuel much wrong. An if we could ONLY put the old fuel in to see if that HELPS HAHA LIFE WOULD BE grand anyway if you find the cause to me please cheers from DOWNUNDER

I assume DTR has an efi engine. I don't have the 300 or fuel inj but believe the tube to B the passage way for the exh heat (hot air off the exterior of the manual) to get to the choke. Some in the sunny South/Southwest (that's U 2 Kookaburra) tell me "I don't need that. U northerners do cuz a cold up there." Au contrair, Kemosabie, it is.

I C we have the visitor form Oz Land again today. Good to C U again! Still waitin for 1 of those great Down Under beers & wanna know if U got your shots yet? ;-}

Yours sounds like a carb. I am more familiar w/them. Our engines had leaded gas for it's lube factor. Now that it's gone should not be a big prob. We got it in cans as a tank additive. I don't use it. It may B the octane level - try goin up a level (87 to 91). But it does not sound like that's the prob. Try - cheep fix or rule out kinda 'speriment. If U 'hafta pump it a few times' it seems wrong. Was this condition (from your last posts re: 'long trip commin up' and rear gear/trani Qs etc) present B 4 any changes? Were any changes done since those posts? When did it start?
My understanding is "1 easy push to the floor" will set the lill' finger (it has steps on it), turn the key & it fires up. In less than 7 min. it should idle w/o probs.

Now let's all wait for some one who really knows to stop by. I'm just shootin off my mouth to get up close n bum 1 of those nice cold Aussie serbesas. 'Bout 2 -3 wks of heat wave up here.
