I have a 1985 F150 4x4 with an inline six that has a great frame(no rust) and I just about finished a rebuild on a new (different) inline six engine for it. The problem I have is that the body & interior is shot, way beyond repair and also to expensive to do. I just picked up a 1987 F150 4x4, 351 eng, that has a great body and box but the undercarrige is pretty rusty. Can I switch the cab, box and the front clip (even though the headlight configuration is different) from the 1987 to the 1985 frame and use the good frame and inline six? Any help here would be great, thanks.
Yes you can. For no hassles, make sure you get the 87 title. One problem I just thought of though. If you have inspections, and they look under the hood, they might be expecting to see a fuel injected 6, not a carbed one. I am not sure but was the 6 fuel injected by 87?
Dave, thanks for the help. I do have both titels but can I use the 85 one? I figured that one has the carbed 6 and not the 351 eng. also no smog stuff on it that I would have to worry about. I never changed an entire cab before, will I have to rewire it? Thanks again
You may want to check with your state's motor vehicle department regarding which title to use. They will tell you which title you can use, or you may have to get what is called a "reconstructed vehicle" title. In the latter case, they would give you a special VIN plate to attach to the truck and that would be your vin and they would issue you a title with that VIN on it.
