I have a 1979 F-150 4x4 with a 429 and Was just wondering what the difference between the plastic housing pump and the steel housing pump? Which one is a saginaw? Which one can I turn up the easiest? I'm going to do a hydraulic steering assist when I put my Dana 60 front end in.
I wouldn't say the Ford Thompson pump is junk, but both the metal housing (preferred) or the newer plastic housing are essentially the same.
A Saginaw pump has a little more output and was available on Econolines (75-91), Lincolns and other Fords. There is even a conversion available, although sometimes hard to find, part # 20-6244
