hey guys i have a question i need a quick answer for. i have a 69 f100 with a 360 that i want to change to a 390. it needs a set of heads. i found good deal on a set of heads from a 62 mercury 352. casting # C1AE 6090-A. will these head work good for my 390. if anyone has answer for me please let me know asap. thanks-Ryan
Yes, but it is generally cheaper to buy rebuilt heads.
I went through this with an early 351w that sunk the valves. I could have had the heads rebuilt for about $600, or buy remans for $425 and trade mine in as cores. A bit of a no-brainer on my part.
As a side thought, those Mercury heads might have the car exhaust manifold bolt patterns as well, so it'll be fun trying to put headers or manifolds on it in your truck.
The 360/390 heads are the same. 1968/71 are marked C8AE-H, do not have hardened seats.
1972/76 heads are marked D2TE-AA and have hardened seats.
Ford also sold these heads to their authorized FoMoCo engine rebuilders, replaced the heads used on 1965/67 (352/390) with these, so you may find some on 1965/67's.
btw: NO Mercury came with a 352. The smallest FE engine available in Mercury's was the 390. Doesn't really matter, since the C1AE heads are the same 352/390.
I got mine through my local Parts Plus shop, I dealt with that shop a lot when I used to work next door, and they do good work. I prefer Parts Plus over Napa, both are pretty close on quality, but Parts Plus typically has better prices.
Those ebay ones might not be as good of a buy as they seem, the ad doesn't mention anything about hardened valve seats and the picture isn't large enough to see if they are.
