Hey guys,
I found a crankshaft from a 390 for my 360 ford pickup. Im still a little leary but if you could answer me this question I probably won't be so hesitant about it. If I put this 390 crank and rod set in this motor will it hit the valves in the head since im planning on using stock heads? I know a little already that the heads from 360's and 390's are interchangeable but are the cc's different? Thanks

The crankshaft, pistons and rods are what separate a 360 from a 390.
The bore is the same for both (4.05"), but 390's have slightly different pistons. The rings are the same.
The stroke is not the same. 360 = 3.50" / 390 = 3.78"
How do you know the crank is from a 390?
1961/72 390 cranks are marked on a journal: 2U / 1973/76's are marked: 3U.
Number dummy will take good care of you Richard, and make sure its a 390 crank, and i think he said that its alright to use the stock heads? this would worry me too! as you don't want the pistons slapping the heads! this would destroy the motor!, i think you are well on your way to having it done by the sounds of it? and keep me updated
Heads should be fine. Same heads were used on both 360 and 390. D2TE-6090-AA were the stock heads in 72 and up. C8AE-6090-H were earlier and somewhat the same casting.

Thanks numberdummy I kind of want to keep it secret where I found the crankshaft so here is some information I pulled from their page they didn't directly say that it had a 2u or 3u stamped in it. Heres the info:
Fits Ford V-8 FE engines 390 406 427 1961-71 w/OE #C1AE-A, C1AE-D,D2AE-D,C2AE-2,C3AE-B,C3AE-C,C3AE-D,C3AE-E,C4AE-B,2U,3U,C2AE-D
Side note this supplier states that it is a 1961 thru 1971 crankshaft kit bearings included.
In 1968, Ford replaced the 352/390 heads (except 390 P/C's used 1964/65) used 1964/67 with C8AZ-6049-M for use as a Service Part Replacement.
All parts sold by dealers are refered to as Service Part Replacements.

QWIST ON A BICYCLE!! SCHEISS ON A STICK!!! A 390 CRANK WAS NOT USED IN 406's OR 427's!
I'd be leery of buying anything from a guy that says that scheiss, and the main bearings are NOT all the same 1961/71.
352 & 360/390 main bearings: 1958/59 are not the same as 1960 and later. The center thrust main bearing is different 1960/62. The other main bearings are the same 1960/65 (except HiPo's).
1966/76 uses different thrust bearings. The others are the same as 1960/65.

Hey brent who do I sound like. Are you stalking me lol. Yeah I will keep you updated Im getting closer to tear down of it right now Im shopping for all the parts I need to make it work the way I want it to.

So does this mean that this is a good part numberdummy? I know I found their information a little strange espically when they said it fits 1961-1971 fe 390 blocks and if I have researched correctly the fe wasn't widely used till 64?

390 introduced 1961, optional on LTD/Galaxies thru 1971.
Standard equipment on full sized Mercury's 1961/71, and T-Birds 1961/67.
Also available as an option on: 1966/69 Fairlane/Torino/Mercury Comet & Montego's / 1967/69 Mustangs & Mercury Cougars.
No 390 (or 360) engines installed in F100/350's till 1968.

Dunno if it's good or not.
The info on the crank usage is wrong, as is the info on the main bearings.
The seller may be generalizing the info, but one never knows...
lol i ain't stocking you, my computer is! i went to check my e-mails and it notified me that you made this thread! that's weird? it said your buddy 1972FordF-100 has started a thread and had the link to it!, strange? how did it know we where buddys? this is not even youtube? so how did it know? i will forward the e-mail to you, it is strange? and just thought i would add my Canadian 2 cents lol and make sure its the right crank, i would hate to see you wast money on something you don't need, i am sure numberdummy will help ya out, and let me know if the crank worked out, and where did ya get it from? AREA 51 lol i know you don't want to anger a moderator with saying website names, but if ya want tell me the link in a e-mail, i am dieing to see this site, its interesting to find hard to find parts, and so far on my truck i got every thing done, all new brakes and lines, and fuel lines and just need the 4 inch lift coil springs in the front, and then a kick down cable for the aod to carb, and then its all body work and paint, and putting new rubber around windows and doors then carpet and fine tuning all around, but getting there!
When you tear your 360 down you will probably notice that the pistons have '390 4V' cast on them. When used with the 390 crank/rod combo this piston comes up close to zero deck for higher compression. When used with the 360 crank/rod combo this piston becomes a low compression piston further down in the hole. Ford used this same piston for both engines in some cases. If you order new 390 pistons I would ask for 4V pistons otherwise if you use 2V pistons they will be down in the hole .020 for some low compression. The next step up is to use a 428 crank/rod/flywheel and use the 390 2V pistons which will be near the top with the 3.98 stroke. Then your engine becomes a 410. Your heads may be C8AE-H or D2TE-AA which are very close to the same thing and will work perfectly in your truck. Smaller intake ports make great torque. 390, 406 and 427s all have a 3.78 stroke and that might be the reason they told you that. They all could use this same crank but there are other things to consider like the 427 crank is usually made from steel and the balance could be different for capscrew lemans rods or nut/bolt type rods. etc. What you are doing is a very good upgrade and with a good intake manifold and 4 bbl carb. with a good set of headers you will notice a big difference that I can promise you. Good Luck! Paul

Thank you Paul I have a question in your quote here you say using the 2v pistons I have to get a crank rod and flywheel is that the same with the 4v pistons as well? Thank you for your information paul looking at it, I probably will have to get new pistons and it will have to be bored believe it or not im gonna be the first one to tear into it this motor is so orginal its still got the carb tags and coil tag which really suprised me. I will do the intake and carb setup, I was still debating headers but most fe nuts like me are recommending the switch to headers but thats for later after I get my expences talleyed.
No, sorry for the confusion. If you bore your block and use a 390 crank and rods, if I was doing it I would order 390 4V (same as 4bbl) pistons in order to obtain a decent compression which the FE loves. Disregard what I said about the 428 crank/flywheel/2V pistons. Thats just what I did in my F250 to make a 410. Save your money for some headers. That will be your weak link on your FE. Paul
