Ok man aint been here in a minute lol, but yeah i have a 1987 f250 5 speed 6.9 liter ok the body is beat all to hell the floor boards are rusted pretty good but the drive trian is still damn good, not i have a near mint 1979 ford f350 that needs a motor and drive trian now what all am i going to have to keep out of the '87 besides the obvious
the frame on the 87 isnt too good theres alot of metal under all the rust lol but the frmae on my 79 is perfect its been z bard and its been restored all it needs in an interior and a better paint job
i have seen a few 76-79's with the 7.3l in them. cant be too hard man. you need to take the solenoids with you, other then those you can rig it all up. set up relays for your ip solenoid and for the glow plugs to run off your accessory wires.
Swapping into a pre-79 4x4 isn't a walk in the park, but is tons easier than going into a 2wd. At least you don't have to work around the steering linkage and box-
that sucks cause mines a 2wd but i was planning on taking most the wiring and rigging it up with a diff fuse box under the hood so i would have 2 fuse boxes and also so i wouldnt have to splice any wires, im going to keep the duel tank set up and put under the '79 i know ill have to keep the perches and maybe the trany mount idk if my slave cyclinders will match up when it comes to the clutch lines. um thats about it. im going to post LOTS of pictures when i start the pull and bs then when i get the truck down here from dallas ill post lots of pics on the install, but while the motor is out in going to rebuild it i can get the kit for 398 im also going to paint it and make it all purtty
Keep the wire harness that hooks up the pump and glow plugs You'll use most of it.
I use the relay hook to a starter button for the glow plugs.
So I throw all the wires to the timer in the back of the engine away.
The pump gets hooked up to the run wire that did go to the coil at the ignition switch .
Make sure not to use the resistant wire.
Save everything for the Alternator You'll use most of that.
I used a 79 frame for My 67 so You can look in My gallery to see how HIGH a 6.9 sits
if You don't cut the oil pan.
Not bad. But I like hearing People at car show say how did He do THAT!
Without the turbo it would be much easier.
And I'm much happier with the 74.
The Crown Vic front end let Me bring the nose of the engine down
where in should be and the drive is unbelievable.
It looks like all your firewall and cowl cuts were for the turbo, so in using an n/a engine I basically won't have to cut anything.
That cab also looks like it has the small tunnel cover, so I may wind up with a bit of extra room even though I'm using a ZF.
Is that radiator for something, or is it a custom unit?
Overall, that truck looked incredible, and very professionally done.
I didn't know where I'd be as to cooling so I bought that off Ebay it is for a 67-79 and for what I thought was a good price($250). With the turbo it was a real good idea I found out latter You can buy one with plastic tanks at Auto zone for a lot less. The last few days here have been over 100 and the 74 has had no heat problems at all I mean cool running. It has a new radiator that came with a parts truck.
