We have a 2002 XLT with a 5.4L engine. We bought it as a Certified Used vehicle from Ford.
The question I have is, what would make a buzzing/vibrating kind of sound that comes from the engine compartment? This happens every so often, but mostly when put into reverse when first started. The sound lasts only for 15 seconds or so and then it's gone. The transmission shifts fine. We also have the 4 corner load leveling suspension. I assume this system works with air pressure. Could there be an air compressor that is making this noise? I'm trying to figure out what the heck is making this noise without having to take it in for service. It's under warranty, but before taking it in, I thought I'd post this on the forum.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Start the truck put it in "N" and switch to 4low and back to park or drive. ( have your foot on the brake because the truck will jump!). If you noise you hearing is the same its the leveling suspension. It will lift the truch 3" from parked level. Drive level is 1' over parked. If this doesn't help repost and I see if I can help from there. By the way Enjoy the 2002 XLT.

I think you nailed it right there! My compressor does the same thing in the 1999.
