Okay I have read until my eyes crossed about the cam phaser noise/cam tensioner noise and have talked to several mechanics and still don't have a clear answer.....I realize this has been talked to death but: 2005 F150 SuperCrew....5.4 V8....153,000 miles. Gotten louder under the hood....my mechanic says cam phasers....Factory fix doesn't last very long (24,000 miles or so).....app. $1800 to repair and he doesn't want the job. My question is :: If I just keep on driving am I goona have an engine failure ?? Jump timing or mess up the cams or what ?? I really don't have the $$$ to repair it right now and darn sure don't want to repair it for just another 24,000 miles....BTW I was directed to this site by a Gentleman in Australia.....thank you...
I have heard more along the lines $950 to repair it and it takes care of the issue. As for the noise and causing further problems I don't think it does. It is just really annoying from what I understand. But someone else will chime in shortly I am sure because I have an 06 this issue should not be a problem for me.
If it is only phasers making the noise then it won't hurt anything to keep driving it. Phasers make noise only at a hot idle. They don't knock when cold or above 1200 RPMs. If you engine makes noise when cold or above 1200 then there is something else causing it and should be looked at. I have seen a few bad roller rockers wipe out the cam lobes or cause the valve to drop into the cylinder.
