test kits can be picked up at napa stores. Can't remember what they call them
I did some searching and found this recent post.https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ease-help.html In perma link 11 Cheezit refers to vacum testing for leaks. Also he mentions fan clutch as a possible cause of puking. It would be worth sending him a message and get his input. From all I have read he is seldom wrong and very helpful..
I should have done this sooner, sorry but better late than never..
great link, thanks flamebuster. So i think I'll check with Napa about the test kit. from the sounds of what cheezit posted on that thread... maybe I need a vacuum test. how much does Ford charge to test it and tell me?
shouldn't there be some obvious performance signs when I'm towing under load, on a steep hill? my cousins stock '03 6.0L passed me on a hill, both of us towing close to the same weight, and i was using tow setting on my Edge Platinum. That was before ANY of my pukes, but only about 2 1/2 months ago. Now I'm using SCT custom tunes.
oh yeah, I added 50/50 mixed green coolant a few times after the first 2 pukes. In total, maybe half a gallon. The FOrd guys gave me a bottle of VC-8 and said adding the whole bottle should neutralize the green coolant and re-balance my PH levels.
I can't say on the cost of the vacum test, I would call several reputable shops that you know are good with the 6.0 motor. The test strips should only be a few bucks. I have seen them sold at our store, you dip the test strip and check the color for reading. The tow settings on most of the tunes I've read about are only in the 50 hp and lower. So that being said tire size even fuel quality could have been the difference between your rig and your cousins. The SCT is a better tune to be running. I myself run stock so I can't give any personal experince on performance improvements with tunes.
How much coolant do you lose say in a day or weeks worth of running..
the first couple of barfs, it seemed the coolant was low enough that I couldn't see any in the bottle, but there was a low level in their, just hard to see. I had to dump in maybe a quart or so, and then got me just under the proper MIN level. This was on the first 2 occasions. My recent one, after the cap was replaced, the level still looked to be at the proper MAX, just enuf to spew out and burn onto hot plastic and make me smell it, and see the stains. No real pukes since then, but limited use.... maybe 100 miles.
since i added green coolant, then added the Ford additive VC-8 to get the PH balanced, i wonder how the strips would show, and if they'd still be accurate?
I think the strips would work because they aren't testing for proper coolant chemicals just the prescience of exhaust in the coolant ,, I don't think the strips are vehicle dependant
But I also am a little worried about your coolant composition ,, that should be tested also adding VC-8 was a cra p shoot IMHO
The strips should work, but just remember that once exhaust gases are present in the coolant, they will remain present until the coolant system is flushed. So it is possible that you could have residual from your previous head gasket work, although at 20k miles ago plus the fact that the system should have been flushed at that time, residuals should not be present. Your knowledge of the work that has been performed might help you figure that out. Since you have some of the wrong coolant anyway, maybe you should do a complete flush, then wait to see if it pukes again, and if it does then do the exhaust gas test dip.
As for the HG test, it is described as part of TSB 09-8-3. The TSB is really aimed at oil cooler and EGR cooler diag, but the possibility of HG failure must be eliminated as part of that diag. So it is described in that TSB starting at step 7, including pressure and vacuum tests. It doesn't look like something I would tackle in my driveway, but at least you will get an overall view of what it involves, including the warranty hours that a tech can claim.
